? FreeCAD Multiple Bodies - Model A Matchstick - Easy CAD Designs
This video will learn you how to design a simple matchstick in FreeCAD. The model is very simple, but it consists of multiple bodies in different colors. I thought it was an easy way to show how to do this.

You can edit STL files in the FreeCAD Part Design workbench too!
Following on from my previous video, i show you how to edit STL files in the Part Design workbench.
This is my previous video about editng STL files in FreeCAD: https://youtu.be/5lwENZeNiNg
First you have to import a simple and clean STL file into a new document.
Then select the STL file, go to the 'Part' workbench and click on the 'Part' tab.
Select 'Create shape from mesh'. I couldn't discover visual differences between 0.10 and 0.80
and left it at 0.10. It has something to do with tolerance.
You can delete or make the old files invisible if you want.
Click on the 'Part' tab again and then click on 'Refine shape'. This makes the flat surfaces become less detailed.
Click one more time on the 'Part' tab and click on 'Convert to solid' to make the object massive instead of hollow.
Than go to the Part Design workbench and create a new body.
Drag the STL inside the body and start creating sketches on the STL file.
You can cut of extrude shapes as you want!
⚠ This method worked with a clean and simple STL file. Some steps are unlikely to be performed with the wrong STL files.

I created my real fixed castor with a 3D printer!
I designed this wheel in FreeCAD while creating my online FreeCAD courses.
You can find them here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKu--JcOZKTOVCnHtzfnV_STMQSpF7Pt4
After creating this course, i decided to make it real with my 3D printer and some fasteners. So here it is!
First i used 20% normal support and 3 layers of 60% dense support with the inside part of the wheel.
This was difficult to remove from the print. The print also damaged because of the removal.
With the second attempt, i used 20% normal support and 3 layers of 30% dense support.
That was less difficult to remove and gave a good result!
I printed the outside part of the wheel with PolyFlex. I scaled it up to 100.5% to fit better around the inside part.
The infill of the first try was 20%, which was a little to low. The second part has an infill of 30%.
The first try was printed without retraction and the second one with 0.75mm retraction.
The top of that print came out better! Both prints have 3 top layers.
I also tested a part of the top with 6 top layers and that one came out the best.
My 3D print settings for the flexible outside part of the wheel (best result):
black PolyFLEX | 3600mm/minute (60mm/second) | hotend 220°C | bed 40°C | 250 micron | infill 30% | 6 top layers | 3 bottom layers | 2 outline layers
fan 100% | brass nozzle 0.35mm | extrusion width 0.40mm | retraction 0.75mm | extrusion multiplier 1.30 | coasting 0.10mm | wipe distance off
My 3D print settings for the inside part of the wheel and the bracket:
black and white PETG | 3600mm/minute (60mm/second) | hotend 215°C | bed 70°C | 250 micron | infill 20% | 3 top layers | 3 bottom layers | 3 outline layers
fan 100% | brass nozzle 0.35mm | extrusion width 0.40mm | retraction 0.75mm | extrusion multiplier 1.00 | coasting 0.20mm | wipe distance off |
20% normal support and 3 layers of 30% dense support

The material used for this print is blue PLA. The nozzle temperature is 185°C and the print bed is 55°C.
The layer height of this print is 0.25mm (250 micron). This is not so bad as you may think and saves a lot of time.
Infill is only 20%.
The top and bottom are 3 layers thick, the outline/perimeter 4 layers.
Printing speed is 3600mm/second. These are my default 3D printer settings for PLA.
The video mostly plays 10 times faster than the actual printing speed.
Some 3D prints require support material to be correctly printed. The 3D print in this video is one of them.
My 3D print support settings from Simplify3D are as following: 12% normal support with a 30% dense support of 3 layers.
The dense support is what will lay on or below the definitive object layers. This dense support has, as the name says,
a higher density to support your 3D print better than the normal support would do.
But how to remove support from a 3D print? Support removal goes better with a pair of tongs instead of your fingers.
Support must not be too dense to avoid damaging your print while removing support.
