Let's break down the job of boom operator into it's different parts starting with representing the sound department on set. It's one thing to simply say "run the set" but it's another to actually handle the business of the sound department on set. I'm not even referring to shutting down noises, addressing overlaps or anything like that - I mean doing what is needed so that you can throw a boom out over talent.
It's true that the actual boom part is a small part of what a boom operator does but there is work that needs to be done before you can even do that. As the face of the department, we have to always handle ourselves appropriately. That means politely assertive when required and tactful in picking our battles. In this video we'll tackle all of this and more.

As boom operators we can certainly wear a lot of cables... IFB to headphones, boom pole to MM-1, MM-1 to transmitter, talkback to return transmitter, etc. Maybe you don't have to worry many or any but for those of us that do, we need to have a system in place to manage those cables. In this video I show you a few things that help me manage mine.

If you've been watching my channel for a while you know I'm a huge fan of open, natural and detailed sound and dynamic microphones are not going to make it very high on a list of most open, natural and detailed sounding mics. There is a very simple thing you can do to help it move up on that list though that you might not be familiar with. Best of all, it doesn't require processing or physically modifying the microphone in a destructive way. By the end of this video you'll know if you prefer using a windscreen, pop filter or neither and answer the question... To use or not to use, that is the question.

Boom operators can be difficult to pin down and ask questions of and even more rare will they list important things they believe you need to know in order to achieve success but in this video, that's exactly what you'll find. Master boom operator and educator Ken Strain joins us in this episode to help create the top 10 list of things every boom operator should know.
Obviously, there are many other things a boom operator should know too and another skilled veteran could have a different list but we believe these 10 things are critical to know and/or master. Perhaps they aren't as widely discussed or maybe we learned thru the school of hard knocks but regardless, serious boom operators should pay attention and and learn.
If you have any questions about anything in this video, be sure to write them in the comments below.

It could be argued that modern microphones can't compare with the ruggedness and durability of old school microphones. Can microphones on the market today compete with old school microphones when it comes to stress tests?
There are videos online of people torture testing the Shure SM58 (what they consider to be the World's Toughest Microphone) but as tough at the SM58 is, it doesn't have a nickname like "The Buchanan Hammer", a nickname given to the Electro Voice 664 based on legendary abuse it received at the hands of EV founder Lou Burroughs.
This video marks the beginning of multiple torture tests I'll be putting the EV 664 through. I have no idea how long this 55-65 year old microphone will last but I'm excited to share this journey with you.
As mentioned, the EV 635A has "inherited" the nickname of "The Hammer" because of the similar, solid build quality. You can buy:

With drones becoming more and more popular in everything from feature films to content creation, the propeller buzz is something we in the sound world are going to have to deal with. The big question we film sound guys are always asked is "how bad is that sound?" They know the answer just like a toddler knows how bad something smells when they want you to smell it but it still happens often. In this video we're going to look at a few options and see if there's anything we can use to dial out the drone sound and preserve our audio.
