You can't be picky. Getting paid cash for your playing is best, but sometimes you can also trade solos for food. At this gig, I was required to play for three hours before I could go near the buffet. Oh boy, I was so hungry and cold by the time I finished, even the pickles were delicious! If cash is not available, you barter. I once got a toothbrush for a song in an Istanbul grocery store. But don't go too far with it, or get too confident. I then tried to trade songs for breakfast at a tourist restaurant in Greece and the cook loved it so much he choked me out in front of customers and took my guitar away. These are memories that last a lifetime, so get out there and make them!

It's finally arrived. I've been like a bear in hibernation since last Sept. Spring is here and I'm getting ready to busk on Friday, March 15. I've been getting all my equipment ready, charging all the batteries. New pedal arrangement, leaving one at home (The pog 2) and added a nice fuzz pedal. Have about a dozen new jam tracks ready to go. Also using new gopro 12 for super wide angle video in 4k. (Bear photos courtesy of Susanne)
I did this short jam to test my new recording method. This is exactly what my street recordings are going to sound like. I've made more improvements, now using a zoom h6 recorder. The guitar signal goes into ipad with the looper, from ipad direct to the zoom input, and then the zoom output goes to the guitar amp. Last year, I used the output of the amp (headphone jack) into the zoom which better than in front of the amp, signal out of the amp was way too bright. I had to spend a lot of time equalizing the audio, knocking down the treble. I finally upgraded to a good zoom recorder this year. It sounds a lot better getting the recording signal right after the ipad, but before the amp. It's still mono, but I add a bit of stereo dimension to the music when mixing.

Busking and youtube facts:
1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. 6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.

You can actually see the weather change during this solo. It starts out dark, then the sun comes out. I would play these long solos after playing too many covers. It's for when I needed alone time where I could be assured no one would even look at me. Like playing at home.

The doctor came in to see me this morning and asked how I was doing. He thinks I would be more comfortable at home and I agree. I don’t have any pain except my butt muscles. I passed all the physical tests. So now I’m just waiting for them to come around again in the next few hours to confirm when I can go home. Released at 12pm.
