Last [Friday’s shootings in Christchurch](https://www.oye.news/news/shootings/breaking-man-opens-fire-on-a-tram-in-the-dutch-city-of-utrecht/), New Zealand which ended with 50 dead and just as many injured have rung the global bell on a call for tougher media censorship.
Yesterday an open letter from Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, who is the head of Counter-Terrorism Policing in the UK was published on the counter-terrorism website.
Basu’s letter is a plea for the UK Government to recognise the threat that the free flow of information can have on a nation and to do something about it.
Basu points out the ironic fact that *“the same media companies who have lambasted social media platforms for not acting fast enough to remove extremist content are simultaneously publishing uncensored Daesh propaganda on their websites, or make the rambling ‘manifestos’ of crazed killers available for download.”*
He said extremist propaganda that might reach tens of thousands of people through their own channels or networks has the potential to reach tens of millions if a national newspaper published it.
He goes onto say in summary that:
> ‘Society needs to look carefully at itself. We cannot simply hide behind the mantra of freedom of speech. That freedom is not an absolute right, it is not the freedom to cause harm – that is why our hate speech legislation exists.’ [source](https://www.counterterrorism.police.uk/acso-neil-basu-issues-open-letter-about-reporting-of-terrorism/)
Basu continually refers to this dangerous information that the UK’s media is publishing as Terrorist propaganda, which he claims inspires other potential terrorists into action, he bases this assessment from the statements of terrorists his team have interviewed over the years.
I think it is undeniable that information can be dangerous, it can reinforce beliefs and prejudices, it can raise one’s emotions causing anger and fear. This is true whether the information is accurate or not. Information which has been designed to produce a specific public emotional response, propaganda, is even more dangerous – But, it’s not the root of the problem, it merely accelerates an exceptionally small minority of people to do what they were inevitably going to do anyway.
Censoring our media is a far more dangerous path to take, with dire consequences. A government which controls its media and dictates the flow of information is a Government who has a self-perpetuating power and thus unbreakable control over its people.
While we have been condemning dictatorships across the World for decades with the oppression they place upon their people through censorship and their own propaganda we are voluntarily begging for it ourselves, a little bit at a time.

Investigative journalist Will Potter is the only reporter who has been inside a Communications Management Unit, or CMU, within a US prison. These units were opened secretly, and radically alter how prisoners are treated — even preventing them from hugging their children.
The following is taken from [Will Potters website:](http://willpotter.com/cmu/)
Father Daniel Berrigan once said that “writing about prisoners is a little like writing about the dead.”[i](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn1)
I think what he meant was that we treat prisoners as ghosts, unseen and unheard. It’s easy to simply ignore them, and even easier when the government goes to great lengths to keep them hidden.
As a journalist, I think these stories—of what people in power do when no one is watching—are precisely the stories we need to tell.
That’s why I began investigating the most secretive and experimental prison units in the United States, for so-called “second-tier terrorists.”[ii](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn2)
The government calls these prisons Communications Management Units, or CMUs. Prisoners and guards call them Little Guantanamo.
They are islands unto themselves, but unlike Gitmo, they’re right here at home, floating within larger federal prisons.
There are two CMUs. One is inside the prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
The second is inside this prison in Marion, Illinois. [iii](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn3)
Neither underwent the formal review process required by law when they were opened.[iv](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn4)
CMU prisoners have all been convicted of crimes. Some cases are questionable, and some involve threats and violence. I’m not here to argue the guilt or innocence of any prisoner. I’m here because, as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall said, when the prison gates slam shut, prisoners do not lose their human quality.[v](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn5)
Every prisoner I’ve interviewed has said there are three flecks of light in the darkness of prison[vi]: phone calls, letters, and visits from family. CMUs are not solitary confinement, but they radically restrict all of these, to levels that meet or exceed the most extreme prisons in the country.
Their phone calls can be limited to 45 minutes per month, compared to the 300 minutes other prisoners receive.[vii](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn7)
Their letters can be limited to six pieces of paper. [viii](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn8)
Their visits can be restricted to 4 hours per month, compared[ix](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn9) to the Supermax where Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph can receive 35 hours.[x](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn10) On top of that, CMU visits are non-contact, meaning prisoners aren’t allowed to hug their family.
As one CMU prisoner has said: “We are not being tortured here, except psychologically.”[xi](http://willpotter.com/cmu/#_edn11)

The footage shows Colorado Springs officer Tyler Walker ramming 18-year-old Alexis Acker into the concrete floor while the girl was already restrained.
The police reports, claim that Walker “escorted her to the floor,” or that he “rolled her to the floor.” Indeed, the officer “escorted” Acker to the floor with such force that her front teeth were smashed in and permanent injuries were caused, including trauma to the face, head, teeth and jaw; migraine headaches, concussion, closed head injuries, memory and cognitive function problems, as well as post traumatic stress disorder.
The incident occurred in late 2013. The video has just been released as part of a $500,000 brutality lawsuit against the CSPD. Acker had been arrested on charges of resisting arrest and assault on a police officer, with cops claiming that she was “intoxicated and verbally uncooperative with police,” during an attempted arrest of her boyfriend.

Malaysia has announced it will send 3,000 metric tonnes of non-recyclable plastic to the Countries that exported it there in the first place. These Countries include the UK, US, Canada and Australia. This new initiative from the Malaysian Environmental Minister comes in an attempt to avoid becoming a dumping ground for rich nations.
Environmental Minister, Yeo Bee Yin, said Malaysia and many developing countries have become new targets for waste dumping after China banned the import of plastic waste.
60 containers stacked with contaminated waste were recently caught being smuggled in en route to illegal processing facilities in the country, these will all be sent back to their Countries of origin.
Ten of these containers are due to be shipped back within two weeks, she said, as she showed reporters contents of the waste at a port outside Kuala Lumpur.
Among the items included in these waste filled containers were cables from the UK, contaminated Milk from Australia and CD’s from Bangladesh.
> *“Malaysia will not be a dumping ground to the world “Yeo Bee Yin, Malaysian Environmental Minister*
Ms Yeo said a UK recycling company exported more than 50,000 metric tonnes of plastic waste in about 1,000 containers to Malaysia over the past two years.

A kind-hearted 79-year-old woman has to serve time in jail for taking care of two stray cats in her neighborhood.
Nancy Segula said it began with her feeding a couple of abandoned kittens who started showing up on her back porch looking for food and water. She lives in the Garfield Heights area of Ohio where, under ordinance 505.23, it is against the law to feed stray dogs and cats. Nancy added:
> “It began with me feeding the stray kitties. I used to have a neighbor that had a couple of cats and he moved away and when he moved away he left the cats.“
> “I would always feed them and take care of them because I was worried about them and I’m a cat lover. And then, once my neighbors around here started being unhappy about it, then they called the animal warden.“
She had to go to court for her most recent citation, where the judge sentenced her to spend ten days behind bars in the Cuyahoga County Jail as punishment for feeding the cats.
Her son, Dave Pawlowski and the rest of her family were stunned by the ruling. He said:
> “I couldn’t believe my mom was telling me that, for what’s she’s doing out here, feeding some stray animals, she gets 10 days in the county jail. I couldn’t believe it.”
> “I’m sure people hear about the things that happen downtown in that jail. Not a lot of good things at all and they are going to let my 79-year-old mother go there?“
> “I understand my mother has broken a law repeatedly with this, and that is a law in Garfield Heights, but it should have been reviewed individually. Why would you send a 79-year-old lady to jail for feeding cats?“
We absolutely agree – it seems unbelieveable Nancy has to serve any time at all for showing compassion towards two abandoned kittens. It certainly seems the neighbor who abandoned the cats in the first place should be held accountable.
Nancy Segula is supposed to report to jail on August 11.
