Because of the confusion in the last three weeks surrounding the public admissions by Muslim scholars conceding that the Qur'an is not as preserved as they had previously thought, many have been coming to Jay to ask him to explain it all. And that is what Jay does in this video, unpacking in just under an hour not only what the scholars said, but what they didn't say, and pointing out the very real debate going on between Muslim apologists for the traditional view of Islam which represents around 99% of the Muslim World (i.e. Mohammed Hijab and Adnan Rashid), and those Western academic Muslim scholars (i.e. Dr Shabir Ally and Yasir Qadhi), who represent only perhaps 1% of the Muslim world, at least on this issue. Jay notes that the academics would like us to remain focused solely on the much later 8th and 9th century Qira'at question, because they can use it to then deflect us from the much more problematic and earlier 7th and 8th century Rasm question (i.e. the skeletal, or consonantal texts of the earliest Qur'anic manuscripts). Adnan Rashid, accidentally moved us into that question last week, which permitted us to begin the more damaging analysis of the consonantal Rasm changes, which will create an even larger 'crisis of faith' for Yasir Qadhi, once he finds out. Nor do we claim that our Bible was 'sent down', as Muslim say their Qur'an was. We don't even claim that we have a textual history of the Bible going right back to the original text, as Muslims do, nor that the Bible is without changes, as Muslims have always done. In the last 3 weeks, however, all four of the Muslim claims concerning the preservation of their Qur'an have been pretty much destroyed, leaving everyone wondering whether there really is any perfectly preserved 'Word of God' anymore? And the answer is, Yes, there is. That's because our Bible isn't the only 'Word of God' which we have. With all the great modernizing and forward looking things MBS is doing for his country, and for Islam, one would have thought that he would also understand just how important that he choose a foundational book or treatise upon which to give authority to it all. He certainly got it right when he confronted both the Islamic Traditions and Wahhibism for not being relevant for the 21st century, so it would stand to reason that he would have much the same for the Qur'an, which is even older and at times even more irrelevant for out times. Yet, he was very clear that the Qur'an would be their sole constitution, all 114 Surahs of it. One wonders if he has actually read it to understand it, or if he has only memorized it as so many Muslims do in order to gain 'Baraka', because there are so many verses in its pages which are not only misogynistic but very violent and just not something you would want to support in this day and age? It could be that he has no other choice, since without the Qur'an Islam just doesn't have a foundation, and no Muslim of note to date has dared to attempt to sanitize it to fit our current century. Yet, one would have wished that after such a great speech and with so many good ideas MBS would have at least sought to consider some way to ask for a critical assessment at least for the Qur'an, much as he did for the Hadith earlier in his talk. We went through the rate of accuracy in the video, and you will find that the earliest Qiblas (up to 706 AD) were within 2.9% off, even from thousands of miles away, including China, and India, whereas the later Meccan Qiblas (all post 727 AD) were off by more than 4.8%, and they were just a few hundred miles away. 2) Why the 14th century? We now come to some of the more damaging material concerning the Historical Problems with the Qur'an, and this has to do with the very first 2 Qur'ans ever written, the first by Zaid ibn Thabit, under the authority of the caliph Abu Bakr, in 632 AD, and the second, again by Zaid ibn Thabit, but this time under the authority of the caliph Uthman, 20 years later, in 652 AD. So, let's look at the problems which exist with these first two Qur'ans. Qur'an #1 (Zaid ibn Thabit's Qur'an, written in 632 AD authorized by Abu Bakr) To know anything about this first recension we have to go to al Bukhari 6:509, written in 850-870 AD, a good 240 years after the fact. We have nothing earlier. Here, then are the questions we need to ask about Abu Bakr’s 1st compilation of the Qur’an 1) Why didn’t God choose a language which could accommodate the Qur’an? •       (i.e. no diacritical marks, nor vowellization until the 8th – 9th centuries) •       Hebrew & Greek already existed, and were previously used…why not use either of them? 2) Why didn’t God choose a man who could ‘read and write’? •       Writing down the Qur’an and preserving it was his primary remit •       So, why didn’t he do either before he died? 3) Why didn’t Muhammad learn to read and write (Arabic only has 28 letters)? •       He had 22 years to do so (Note: I learned to read Arabic in 2 weeks!) 4) What about Zaid ibn Thabit? He was Muhammad’s secretary! Isn’t that his job? 5) Why didn’t Abu Bakr make copies and disperse them to the 9 provinces in 634 AD, as Uthman did later on? •       These included: Basra, Baghdad, Damascus, Jerusalem, Cairo, Alexandria, Aden, Herat, and Nishapur 6) Muslims say 1,000s died at Yamama, though the traditions tell us only 70 Hafiz (those who memorized the Qur’an) died •       Doesn’t this prove that there were very few who actually knew the Qur’an? •       Doesn’t this also prove that there was a real crisis with the Qur’an? •       Doesn’t this moreover prove that memorization wasn’t good enough to preserve the Qur’an?
