Historical Materialism vs Idealism (from Noam Chomsky and Bad Faith to Hegel's Dialectics)
This video continues an exploration of Corneilius Castoriadis’ book “The Imaginary Institution of Society.” Specifically. we consider his objection to Marx’s understanding of historical materialism and historical change and attempt to defend Marx’s Hegelianism from Castoriadis’ criticisms. Could a dialectical approach to historical change makes sense and if it can make sense of the struggle for socialism. Along the way, we’ll paraphrase Mark Fisher’s “Ghosts of My Life.”
The modern world is at an impasse. Disasters scroll across our smartphone screens and we’re invited to like, follow or upvote, but critical thinking is harder and harder to find. Are there reactionaries in our midst, people with a right-wing agenda pretending to be leftist? Is "The Bellows," the podcast "What's Left?," Malcolm Kyeyune, part of some secret red/brown alliance? What about Red Scare, Chapo, or even Zero Books?
In this Pop the Left conversation Derick Varn and Douglas Lain evaluate two essays from the publication "The Bellows" before discussing just how to handle the possibility of right-wing infiltration of the left.

Responding to Tucker Carlson’s Prager U video Illegal Immigration: It's About Power we take excerpts from Agata Pyzik’s “Poor But Sexy” and Yasin Kakande’s “Slave States” in order to explore the true impact of undocumented workers on the economy and on wages, and in order to explore what the consequence of offering a path towards citizenship might really be for both the native working class and for the working class as a whole.

Ben Burgis, author of Give Them an Argument: Logic for the Left, returns with a logic lesson for ultraleftists who want to conclude that the fact that Sanders lost the nomination to Biden proves that a social democrat like Bernie Sanders will never be able to win within the Democratic party.

An interview with Kim Jones, preschool teaching assistant, in West Virginia during the successful wildcat strike of March 2018. On Tuesday, after the strike ended, Kim wrote: "We won, in the big picture, the day we walked out. Because we started a rowdy conversation about economic justice that stretched around the world. And we did it, by putting our small differences aside and acting as one for the common good. In America, in March 2018, that's the most countercultural thing a group of people can do. It's almost a miracle."
