Swimming tutorial. Legs. Part 3. How to improve your Freestyle Swimming Technique | Stroke.
This is part 3 of a series of swimming video tutorials on how to swim basic freestyle. On this video I talk about what I consider the definitive factor on your speed while swimming, the legs. If you have the correct legs position and technique, this will be the motor that will drive you to success. Just like a boat, the speed is generated on the back and the stirring is mostly on the front
These tips and techniques will work best to help you improve dramatically your stroke if you do two things: 1- Focus on one thing at a time 2- Practice until you dominate that thing and move to the next.

Before we start I will tell you that all of the backstroke starts of this video are illegal. They are illegal because we put our feet on the ledge of the pool, but since we don’t have a backstroke ledge or a touch pad, the wall is too slippery and this is the only way we can practice them. You can practice this way too, if you don’t have those things and the wall is slippery.
If found this webpage where you can buy backstroke wedges:
http://www.backstrokestartwedge.com/429699512/category/810777
Make sure to practice this start very often. If you don’t have the means to practice it in your pool make sure to do it during meet warm ups, enough to feel confident about it.

Unlike other sports, in swimming, trash talk can surprisingly give your rivals an edge. This video explores why psychological strategies common in team sports might backfire in the pool, especially in high-stakes events like the Olympics' 4 x 100 freestyle relay.

Do you love learning new skills?
Here are four tips to help you learn any new skill:
1- Set goals
Goal setting is the first and most important step. You need to create SMART goals.
• Specific.
• Measurable.
• Attainable.
• Relevant.
• Time Bound.
2- Schedule time.
Learning requires time. Willpower never lasts. So schedule a time when you have no excuse to miss practice time. A little bit daily is way better than a lot once a week.
3- Acquire knowledge.
The next step is to learn from the best teachers available. With the Internet that is easier than ever. Prioritise the mini-skills that will help you the most in learning the new skill and learn those first.
4- Practice a lot
Don’t get discourage if you don’t get it the first time, or the second, or the one-hundredth time. Most things that are worth learning require 20 hours on average. So have a system where you can measure your success in order to motivate yourself and keep going!
I swam for 15 years in the competitive arena and I hope I can transmit my knowledge as clearly and simple as youtube allows me to. I plan on doing a couple of these to spread the knowledge I have acquired on swimming. I will do collaborations with people with even more knowledge and experience to do more advanced type videos.
The point of this channel is to spread the intrinsic joy that all humans share when we learn something new, doesn't matter how insignificant it might appear. I believe improvement makes us feel more alive and thus, if done right, help create a better world.
So if you enjoy learning new things, swimming, dancing, drawing and other skills this channel is for you! So make sure to subscribe, watch, learn, practice and enjoy!

Song: "Suddenly" by Otis McDonald

The majority of swimmers used to be very young, not very athletic outside the pool, and good at only one thing, swimming.
Because of this many swimmers got injured or bored of the sport and left. Olympians and competitive swimmers retired at a very young age and swimming was considered something very young people did. But for the past 20 years or so, all of that has changed.
This birth of a new type of swimmer is being fueled by a combination of several things: a better scientific understanding of how the body and the mind work, the introduction of masters swimming in more countries, increasing number of triathletes, Crossfit athletes that want to be good at everything, including swimming, YouTube tutorials and more recently because during the pandemic swimmers were forced to look at what did could improve outside of the pool.
I’m not even talking about the pro-olympic-level swimmers. I’m talking about what the best coaches and athletes of every swimming level are doing, the local kids of your city that just started competing to the masters that do it recreationally or even competitively at national or international level. This new breed of swimmers, no matter their age, are athletic, strong, mobile, resilient, and very importantly they actually enjoy swimming.
If you have been following us for a while, you probably have some of those skills already. But now we are taking our community to the next level. Instead of just giving you generic swimming advice, we will give you more specific, measurable and community driven guidance.
Let me say that one more time, because this is important if you want to improve your swimming and enjoy all its benefits.
Specific, measurable and community driven guidance.
Specific; because we studied the 7 skills that are necessary to become this new type of swimmer. And then divided those 7 skills into 29 sub-skills to make it even more specific.
Measurable because they say that “If you can't measure it, you can't improve it.” The way our community members will measure their improvement will be the topic of another video, but I can tell you right now that we have more than 200 tests ready for you. With the help of these tests you’ll improve even the things that you cannot measure like that great feeling of being in the water and moving however you want to.
And community driven because you will be a part of this. By asking questions, answering our polls, doing the tests, texting us or by going to our swimming camps, you will now more influence on what type of content we make. Our most active community in fact is on the discord app. I’ll leave a link on the description.
Since I uploaded the first swimming video to this channel, I have learned a lot about swimming and how the body and the mind

66% of you told us that you feel shortness of breath before your muscles feel very tired. This shortness of breath occurs when the blood becomes more acidic. The body's response to reduce acidity is to get rid of carbon dioxide by breathing more often and with more volume. And I don't need to tell you, this feeling is stressful.
We can survive for weeks without food, days without water or sleep, but without breathing we can only survive for a few minutes. Our body knows that breathing is the number 1 priority. It affects almost all functions of the body and mind. Our bodies think that swimming is a very high risk because we do not have access to immediate breathing. The feeling of wanting to breathe a lot is the way in which the body forces us to never lack oxygen. The problem with hyperventilation is that while it increases the oxygen level in the blood, it decreases the oxygen levels in the muscles and brain. As we said, breathing a lot reduces carbon dioxide. With too little carbon dioxide in the blood, blood vessels constrict and red blood cells retain oxygen instead of delivering it to the brain and muscles. This discovery was called the Bohr effect.
On this video we will go over the three best exercises you can do to increase your CO2 tolerance.
