The Wairau Lagoons are located near Blenheim, Marlborough, NZ.
They have formed over the last 6,500 years behind a 8 km-long boulder bank created from gravel and stones washed up the coast by sea currents. Water from the surrounding hills gathers behind the boulder bank and combines with the tide flushing in and out each day.
The productivity of the Wairau lagoons drew Maori to hunt for food. It is thought that some of the channels have been made or extended to help trap moulting birds or eels. Evidence from the boulder bank confirms some very early camps were made there and where the now-extinct moa, were hunted and eaten.
This video was produced as part of the Ngā Tapuae o Kupe exhibition, held by Maori Filmmaker and Photographer, Keelan Walker.

Te Āwhina Marae stands under the two mountains; Pukeone and Tu Ao Wharepapa. The Motueka river runs swiftly, bringing life and nourishment to the district.
In 2024, the local whānau of the marae completed a ground-breaking housing project that saw the completion and opening of 20 new papakainga (houses). This came at a time when there was a nationwide housing crisis impacting families all over the country.
One of the other benefits was that this kaupapa would see the return of a thriving community in and around the marae. This story celebrates the completion of this project, and the dawn ceremony during the opening of the papakainga.
