Back To The Future. This first film was made at a time when modern CGI and digital compositing didn't exist, all the effects animation was hand-drawn, one frame at a time, and then printed optically onto the live-action plates. Wes Takahashi was the creator of the iconic DeLorean Time Slice Effect, Director Robert Zemeckis said he wanted something never seen before, he said he wanted it to be violent, "like a Neanderthal sitting on the hood of the DeLorean and chipping away the fabric of time in front of him- or something to that effect." so Wes Takahashi got to work on various effects, sparks and glowing lights, flashes and vapor trails, and in the end, Zemeckis wanted a combination of absolutely everything. The flashing pops, animated comets and vapor trails, the animated sparks that bounced off the space/time fabric, and the Time slice tearing open were all hand-animated in ink, pencil, or airbrush, the blue glowing tubes were done by hand roto-ing each frame and then giving the timings to the Optical department so that they knew when to double expose some light onto those areas, and the implosion effect was actually a practical explosion, printed running in reverse, and then composited with everything else into the final effect. Back To The Future II. The second film was a combination of old techniques and modern solutions, since convincingly real CG models were still unavailable a remarkable amount of practical models and miniatures were made for this film, Biff's Casino and Hotel building was an 8ft (2.4m) miniature building with light bulbs behind the window cutouts, the police hovercar was a 1/5 scale model made from vacuum-formed plastic, there was a 1/5 scale DeLorean with servos to fold the wh ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KjETrY8Z48

So, in this video, we're going to explore... Some of those detailed models and sets, like the overgrown vine set or the house splitting in two, complicated puppets, animatronics, and... well, I suppose you'd call this "Plantatronics" and incredible digital effects! ...For this warping effect, ILM didn't actually have any proper scans or measurements of the actor's hands so they got the production company to send them a Xerox of the actor putting his hands on the photocopier's glass. ILM even spent 3 months developing two ground-breaking software programs, one was called iSculpt and was used to create realistic facial expressions and the other was for creating realistic digital hair and fur for the awesome CG lion and these ... Ummm... not-so-awesome monkeys. Designing the look for all the animals took months of research, hundreds of photographs, and numerous sketches before they managed to find the correct balance between amusing and threatening which was both wild enough to scare the audience and still tame enough to achieve a family-friendly rating. The mantra for every movie is "Get as much in camera as you can" so during the design process they also had to assess which animal could be a physical puppet and captured "in camera", and which had to be CGI. For example, animals that didn't have to move around too much, like the plants and the crocodile could be 100% animatronics, animals that had to have a wide range of movement, like the mosquitoes and the monkeys were 100% CGI, and animals that had to move around but also had close-up beauty shots or had to interact with the cast were both animatronics and CGI. The lion was one of these digital/practical hybrids. They built the lion with an animatronic head that could be controlled by external operators whilst the front paws were controlled by a creature performer. This performer was concealed inside the lion and wore a headset with LCD screens in order to see how he was moving. the entire puppet was then supported by a crane on a dolly that it could be moved around on. The animatronic lion was used for the close-up and the facial expression shots, and the CG version was used for the shots that required full body movement. If you stop to look for it, you can actually see the transitions between the two quite clearly in this scene We start with the animatronic model, here too, now it's CGI back to animatronics and back to CGI Now here, if we slow it down, you can see just how good their new fur tool was. There are around 1.5 million hairs individual on this lion and the two minutes of total screen time that the CG lion has, took 5 months to complete. Now I know what you're thinking "if they were able to make this CG lion look so good, why did they leave these monkey's looking so bad?" Well, the short answer is that, back when the movie was made, they just couldn't possibly make them look any better, and the main reasons for this were lighting, and reference. For the lion scene, they had an animatronic puppet that they could use as a light reference on set, the scene also occurs inside the house under controlled lighting conditions. This meant that even though there were parts of the lion (Like this rear leg here) that didn't quite sit right in the shot they could be hidden in shadow. The monkeys though were a completely different story. Even though maquettes were made to define the monkey's look, there was no puppet that they could use for light reference, and the monkeys themselves mainly appeared outdoors in broad daylight with little or no shadows to hide their flaws. Just by watching the Hunger Games you wouldn't realise that it has a huge amount of vfx, roughly the same amount as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. 1,200 shots completed in just 23 weeks and on a very tight budget. The fact that the VFX for the hunger games were so varied, from animated wasps, or crowd simulations to fire, explosions or holograms meant that a lot of different vfx houses had to be used. Hybride One of the main contributors was Hybride who not only did set and crowd extensions and the effects for "the wall of fire" but also created the incredible control room. for this they made a set with green screen backgrounds and desks with green tops so they could later add their 3D holographic table top interface. In order to avoid the actors looking like they were just randomly touching the table they created some animations for the actors to use as reference including actions for zooming in, moving and generally interacting with the control rooms interface. Rising sun Rising sun pictures collaborated with Rhythm and hues to produce over 200 shots, including some of the films most iconic. They created Katniss's fire dress as well as the "wings of fire" which required extensive work to position correctly and then to have them respond to the actors movements and the effect of the wind. They also worked on creating the wasp and mutation assets that were unleashed by the game makers in the final moments of the games. but their largest task by far was to create a complete CG Capitol environment and sprawling CG views of the magnificent central city of Panem. They used Roman and Nazi architecture as inspiration to create a cold and calculated look to the city and add to the overall feeling of dictatorship and oppression. Collaborative Effort Tremendous organization and synchronization between VFX houses was needed to complete this monstrous task. And the "mutt"ation scene is the perfect example. Rising sun pictures created the basic "Mutt" asset and sent it to rhythm and hues who added muscle, skin and rigged and animated it. They then sent it to Hybride who then incorporated it into their control room holographic interface.
