Penny Stove (Part 2) - Urban Street Survival by TheUrbanPrepper
Urban Street Survival: Learning from the Homeless
"PENNY STOVE": Construction and Testing (PART 2)
During my research on "The International Homeless Forum" (www.homelessforums.org) I was introduced to a stove often used by the homeless called a "Penny Stove". I had previously heard of a "Hobo Stove" (using a #10 can), but never a Penny Stove. After doing some research on Google and YouTube, I have found that this is a project often used by ultralight backpackers. It is basically a DIY alcohol stove build out of 2 soda cans attached together.
In this video I show you my first attempt at constructing and testing a "Penny Stove" as part of my research for my "Learning form the Homeless" video series.

The following video is part of my Vehicle Preps videos series. This one features my Signaling Module. The purpose of the items in this module are to help alert other drivers of my position in a roadside assistance situation, such as a flat tire, fender bender or stalled vehicle. There are items specific for daylight and nightlight illumination.

PROJECT: Home Prepping System
TIER: 1
MODULE: Food
LEVEL: 1
The Level 1 "Food" module outlines the bare minimum amount of food for an emergency food supply, which will be 72 hours (3 days) for the Home Prepping System. For this system, the Level 1 food supply should allow you to leave at the spur of a moment for an unexpected a picnic or a 3-day weekend. Rather than have food items that are common in backpacking or bug out bags, the non-perishable food in this module will consist of items that are regular in your home grocery list and eaten all the time. Since the food in this module are items that are actually used, the contents of this module are consistently rotated every quarter of the year to ensure freshness and present preference. Note: Pets will be covered in a separate video/document.
FOOD LEVELS:
LEVEL 1: 72-hours worth of non-perishable meals. Regular food items that are purchased during your normal grocery shopping. Little to no preparation needed. Only add water or simply heat. Stored in a contain that allows for easy transportation. These are preps that you should actually used. Always be ready to go out for a fun 3-day weekend with the family!
LEVEL 2: One "Pay Cycle" worth of non-perishable food stored in your pantry. This could be 1-week, 2-weeks, or 1-month, , depending on your particular work situation. Expect the unexpected when it comes to your employment and ability to provide food for you and your family. Does not include food presently in the kitchen cabinets or refrigerator. No camping or survival food. Regular food items that are popular in your household. Rotate items into kitchen as needed and restock.
LEVEL 3: Enough food for your worst case emergency situation based on your region. This could be 1-month, 3-months, 6-months or 1-year. Research emergencies that are possible in your region and determine an appropriate amount of emergency food needed for that scenario. This should not be confused with "Homesteading", so no chicken coops, green houses or hunting needed (especially in an Urban environment). Survival food rations and techniques are recommended for this level to maximize food shelf life.

BUILDING A BUG OUT BAG: Research and Development - COMMUNICATIONS
This is part of my "Building a Bug Out Bag" video series that will document my process of redesigning my B.O.B. The bag will be divided into multiple "compartments", which will each have two related videos: an R&D (Research & Development) video and a finalized version video that shows what I eventually decided on for items in the particular compartment.
This video is for my "COMMUNICATIONS" compartment. I am currently in the early design process of this compartment. This Communications Compartment would be included in my Bug Out Bag and will be labeled so another person would be able to easily identify it, if necessary (Ex: the wife). The items included in this compartment are for communicating between myself and my immediate bug out party (Ex: wife) and also to communicate with the outside world. I would like to have methods of gathering information (intel) from local agencies through various radio methods. I also would like to be able to contact emergency help through personal signaling equipment.
Any input that you could provide to this COMMUNICATIONS compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Fire is a vital part of emergency preparedness and survival. It is used for providing warmth, cooking food, boiling water, signaling, morale and more. There are multiple methods for starting a fire without special equipment that can be purchased, which is an important survival skill to have. However, it is so much easier and quicker to use a designated fire starting tool like a match or a lighter. In this Fire Module, I applied “The Rule of Three” to both the fire starters and the tinder. I wanted to have three different methods for starting fire and three different tinder options for redundancy purposes. It is common for methods to fail when actually needed. Since fire starting gear is fairly lightweight and small, I think it is a good idea to also have a backup stored outside of the module itself (e.g., stored elsewhere in a backpack), just in case the fire kit were to get lost.
