IRON. BEECH. ELM. Can I build a crossbow from scrap? The Prod. Part 2. Continuing my build of a crossbow from scrap bits and bobs, I work on elm - the prod (the bow). As I tillered this little bow, the weather became worse and worse. The so called Beast from the East arrived, its powerful Siberian winds, sub zero temperatures and driving snow clamping down the whole country - and driving me into the shed to complete tillering. I shape the prod with a Japanese Shinto saw rasp before moving onto E. Garlick & Son Thomas Flinn cabinet scrapers and sandpaper. I end up with a prod drawing just under 100lbs at 10" - a modest crossbow prod but at least I can string and draw it by hand.
Before this, I have made only one simple, low power crossbow - very loosely based on the Skane artefact. This second bow will be a prototype for a better build some time in the future. This is just for fun - can I build it from odds and ends I find lying around or bought cheaply? The Scrap Bin Crossbow.
Part Two.
To be continued.
E Garlick & Son Thomas Flinn cabinet scrapers and Shinto Japanese saw rasps both available from Amazon and eBay.
