The Great Unconformity is a gap in the geologic record thought to represent 6km of missing rock. This video is all about the planetary and celestial catastrophes that could have erased all that stone from the face of the Earth, and started life as we know it.
Everyone's favorite alien scientists, Quinn and Micky, meet up with author Mary Ellen Hannibal to learn how regular humans can participate in science in a non-professional capacity. Ms. Hannibal is a treasure trove of information about citizen science, and has dedicated many years of her life to salving the rivalry between humans and nature. This conversation also explores the relationship of individuals to the whole, birth and death, and the role of theory and story in science.

Exposing The Appeal of Motivated Reasoning
How did you come to believe in everything that makes you, you? Did you feel the sneaky appeal of motivated reasoning, or did it take you by surprise? It used to be that scientists figured people made decisions about the world and their beliefs in a fact-based way. But that… doesn’t seem to be the case. Most people’s brains pick through available information, discard whatever causes unpleasant emotions, and keeps whatever creates the most comfortable version of reality imaginable. Reason, even for those most highly trained in science and mathematics - seems to be much more about tribal, emotional ties than it is about just the facts.

Mark Nelson and 7 of his crewmates were stuck in isolation for 730 days inside of Biosphere 2, a self-contained ecosystem in the Arizona desert. It is the largest closed system ever created by humans on their planet, and proved an important testing ground for everything from sustainable agriculture to small-group psychodynamics. Here Dr. Nelson contrasts the the resilienacy of the biome with the struggles of the human biospherians.

When the world seems like it’s moving too fast for comfort, how do you make decisions? Is it a random walk towards an uncertain future? Is it fear based? Is it by gradually whittling down the set of possibilities to the absolute best option, given what you know now? Is it based on some prediction of what the future might hold?
Chances are, it’s a mixture of all of the above, given the circumstances in which you’re making the choice. Our conversation with L.A Paul, a professor of philosophy and cognitive science at Yale University explores the ways in which humans come to make up their minds when facing high-stakes transformative hurdles. She also thinks a lot about the effect that those decisions have on our existence in general.
We consider what it means to choose while embracing uncertainty - and how our relationship to this discomfort can be tempered by a deeper understanding of the ways that rationality and morality overlap.

Dr. Gary Kobinger uses viruses as tools to fight disease. But is a virus an active process? A virus can't power itself. Why call a virus a microorganism, or even alive, if it can’t move on its own? Rather than treating viruses as living objects, it might make more sense to see them as a process by which organisms passively exchange genes with each other, even across species lines.

When you’re pushing the limits of human technological ability, should you be worried that modern science is about power? There are two opposing forces that steer the course of consensus science - quality of thought on one hand, and narrative control on the other. This conversation with Jeremy Rys, YouTube’s own @Alienscientist, is all about what it’s like when you hang out on the cutting edge of engineering outside the institutions.
Jeremy has grown a community centered around doing just that - and has started a lab that builds and tests various propulsion prototypes to see what gems may have fallen through the cracks of history. Extreme patience rewards the seeker, for even the most far-out ideas will produce the occasional pearl of wisdom. If researchers on the cutting edge dismissed everything ever labeled as “pseudoscience,” maps of the universe would probably still have Earth at their center.
