Portland sweeps huge homeless encampment to find 150 stolen cars live pigs and tons of garbage
PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — After years of unsanctioned camping, the City of Portland, Oregon, has cleared the Big Four Corners Natural Area.
KATU was there when cleanup crews pulled in two weeks ago and tracked the progress for days. They pulled out more than 150 stolen cars, tons of trash, and even live pigs from the area. It was one of the most extensive camp cleanups in the city's history, and the damage left behind is shocking.
Michael Thomas shopped at the Walmart at 301 San Mateo Blvd. SE in Albuquerque, New Mexico, every week for roughly three years up until six months ago.
He began to see more people stealing items from the store. Sometimes, he saw shoppers physically attacked.
So when Walmart said last month that it would be closing the store, Thomas wasn't surprised.
It's "very sad," he told Insider, because there aren't many retailers with stores in that part of Albuquerque. But it is "expected," he said.
The San Mateo Boulevard store is set to close on March 10 after opening in July 1985, according to Walmart spokeswoman Lauren Willis. The store has 287 employees, all of which are eligible to transfer to another store in the area.
Walmart did not answer questions about whether crime rates at the Albuquerque location were responsible for the decision to close it. But Albuquerque police officers had their hands full with the store in the past year. The Albuquerque Journal reports that 708 calls were made requesting police service at or near the store in 2022.
"There is no single cause for why a store closes," Willis told Insider. "We do a thorough review of how a store performs and weigh many factors before making the difficult decision to close a facility."
She added that the Albuquerque Police Department "has been a great partner and we are extremely appreciative of their efforts to combat crime at this store."

In a surprising turn of events, ousted Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, affectionately referred to as Beetlejuice, pleads with Texas Governor Greg Abbott to stop sending migrants to Chicago. The Windy City, a proud sanctuary city, is struggling to accommodate the 8,000 illegal immigrants already there. Lightfoot describes the situation as dangerous and inhumane, despite Texas having faced over one million crossings this year alone. Is this just the most ridiculous thing ever? One might think so.
As southern states grapple with the overwhelming influx of migrants, Chicago has experienced a ten-fold increase in new arrivals. Sanctuary cities like Chicago, once so eager to welcome these individuals, now claim to be tapped out of resources. Meanwhile, Texas has had to manage a staggering one million crossings compared to Chicago's 8,000. One can't help but wonder if those numbers aren't just a tad bit lopsided.
In a letter posted to Twitter, Lightfoot urged Abbott to reconsider the "dangerous and inhumane action" of sending migrants to Chicago. However, it seems that the real problem lies with the lack of a controlled southern border, allowing for the mass migration we're seeing today. With sanctuary cities experiencing budget shortfalls and their downtown cores in decline, it's no wonder they're feeling the strain of this ongoing crisis.
Governor Abbott has been sending migrant buses to sanctuary cities across the country, including Chicago, New York City, and Washington D.C., highlighting the issue of an open southern border. While Chicago's Mayor pleads for relief, perhaps it's time to address the real problem at hand – a controlled and secure border that allows for a more humane and manageable immigration process.

As Texas reels in another business behemoth, California might as well hang a "Closed for Business" sign. Thermomix, a kitchen appliance manufacturer, is the latest company to pack up its corporate headquarters from Thousand Oaks, California, and head for the pro-business utopia of Dallas, Texas. This move is a no-brainer given that Texas is renowned for rolling out the red carpet for businesses, whereas California keeps tripping over its own. The Golden State is basking in its outdated glory, relying on its allure as "the place to be," while its out-migration continues to impact its economic viability. Meanwhile, Texas offers what any sensible business wants: less bureaucracy, a pro-business climate, and none of that "equitable and inclusive" folderol that's making California an entrepreneur's nightmare. So while California's Governor Gavin Newsom is out giving lukewarm pitches for businesses to move to his state, Texas just sits back and watches the companies roll in like the tide.
Thermomix is an "up-and-comer" with U.S. sales totaling more than $30 million last year. But what really spices up this corporate relocation is the ambitious expansion plan Thermomix has for supercharging U.S. sales. Businesses, large and small, are clearly getting the message: The Lone Star State is where the future is. And lest we forget, it's not just businesses. People are packing up and leaving California, taking trillions of dollars of assets and future business growth with them. Texas is increasingly becoming the land of opportunity, a place where you don't have to look over your shoulder when you head to the grocery store. In short, Texas is offering what California once promised but failed to deliver: a better future.

The City of Seattle Office of Economic Development (OED) and Mayor Jenny A. Durkan announced the launch of Seattle Restored—a new program focused on activating vacant commercial storefronts in Downtown Seattle neighborhoods such as Westlake, Belltown, Pioneer Square, and Chinatown-International District (CID). OED is partnering with Seattle Good Business Network, Shunpike , and real estate broker Susanna Tran to match vacant downtown Seattle storefronts with small business owners and artists to facilitate pop-up shops and art instillations—prioritizing Black, Indigenous, and other entrepreneurs and artists of color.
Activating storefront vacancies will economically, socially and culturally benefit neighborhoods, small businesses, artists and property owners by creating vibrant and engaging streetscapes that encourage the public to visit downtown, support local businesses and support local artists. This program is funded by the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund (CLFR) established under the American Rescue Plan.
“Downtown is Seattle’s economic engine, and it’s up to us to help it build back better than ever for all those who live, work, or visit. As part of our effort to revitalize downtown, we’re making it easier than ever to pursue new, innovative uses for storefronts, like art installations or museums,” said Durkan.
“Earlier this year, we passed legislation to increase flexible uses for downtown vacant storefronts, and now, Seattle Restored will make direct investments in activating dozens of vacant storefronts. I appreciate OED, and their partners for working to help downtown small businesses, workers, and arts and cultural organizations recover.”

Well, folks, it seems that Center City Philadelphia is about to lose another gem – the Target store at Washington Square. Yep, that's right, the place where you could buy everything from a microwave to a pair of socks is shutting down for good on May 13. Apparently, multiple years of trying to improve performance just wasn't cutting it. So, they're packing up and leaving the good ol' 1100 block of Chestnut Street.
As you might expect, the locals are just thrilled about this. Kristen Everett, who frequents the store and lives nearby, can barely contain her excitement. And Fred Kogan is just over the moon that his neighborhood is losing yet another store, right when Jefferson is opening up. What a time to be alive!
But hey, don't let the doom and gloom get to you. While it might seem like the local shopping scene is sinking faster than the Titanic, 6abc's data journalism team is here to remind us that, believe it or not, more stores are actually opening. So, there's that little ray of sunshine for you.
In the meantime, if you're looking to grab a bargain before the doors close, you've got until May 13 to make your final purchases. After that, you'll have to schlep to another Target location or, heaven forbid, use their website or app.

In a provocative turn of events, Texas Governor Greg Abbott continues his controversial practice of sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, sparking heated debate and logistical chaos. A plane from Texas, carrying 355 immigrants, recently landed at Rockford Airport, Illinois. Upon arrival, the passengers were promptly escorted out of Winnebago County and directed towards Chicago, a known sanctuary city. This action reflects a growing tension between states over handling the influx of illegal immigrants, with sanctuary cities feeling the strain of their welcoming policies. As federal and local governments clash over the best approach, the situation underscores the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform and better coordination at all government levels.

A recent case in El Paso has drawn significant attention. Charges against 200 migrants who rushed the border were dismissed due to a technicality. This decision was made by Judge Ruben Morales, who cited a missing transfer order as the reason for the dismissals. The district attorney, Bill Hicks, intends to appeal, but the migrants have already been released into federal custody. This incident highlights ongoing challenges at the southern border, reflecting broader debates on immigration policies and enforcement.

Police raided the Portland West Burnside psychedelic mushroom shop Shroom House early morning, seizing evidence and arresting multiple people, and putting an end to one of the city’s biggest holiday-season attractions.
Shroom House has been operating since Oct. 24, violating federal and state laws governing the use of psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon. That hasn’t deterred Portlanders, who lined up for over six hours on many days this month to purchase psychoactive fungi. A small queue formed this morning in the pouring rain before being told by a reporter that the store had been raided.
