Slumber Party Massacre (1982) is an underrated slasher comedy. Slashers tend to be misogynistic, but this particular slasher was written and directed by females. Does the female view change the formula? Find out.
Giallo is a subgenre of horror films that gets less praise from the general American audience than it deserves. Gialli are Italian based, deriving from the word yellow, describing the yellow spine of the murder mystery books of the 1920s. Yeah, Gialli eventually became the American slasher film, but Giallo is very different from modern-day slashers. They share similarities such as a killer stalking beautiful people, blood, and sexual themes, but Gialli focuses more on the mystery of the killer and tends to have a bit more style to the look of the film.
I’ve gone to great lengths in other reviews to better break down Gialli. So If you want a more in-depth look at Giallo films, then check out some of my other reviews. I’ve covered films from Dario Argento, Umberto Lenzi, Sergio Martino, and Lucio Fulci, all of whom are some of the best directors of the genre… but I’m forgetting a name, a big name. Mario Bava! The father of the Giallo movement!
Taking cues from the Giallo mystery thrillers as well as being inspired by Hitchcock, Bava cemented himself as a master of this form. He started by making a name for himself in the horror genre with hits like Black Sunday and Black Sabbath before he created the modern Giallo with The Girl Who Knew too Much. The title of which was copied from Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew too much from 1934 and 1956... And yes Alfred Hitchcock remade his own movie.
Now, this is the embarrassing part. I’ve only seen one Mario Bava film and I saw it when I was around 13. My local dollar tree sold 2 film DVD packs and so I picked up all the horror ones I could find. The packages have seen better days, but these are some of my earliest deep dives into the horror genre. Now even though I didn’t know anything about directors back then, I did know that Hatchet for a Honeymoon was my favorite of these films.
So that’s it. I have seen 1 Mario Bava film about 17 years ago… I think it’s about time I see another. Why not start with the most influential Giallo of all time? Blood and black lace.

What's on the other side of the door? The Slayer (1982) is a slasher classic that was once on the infamous Video Nasty list. Even though some Video Nasties are truly deserving of their sought-after reputation like the evil dead, the last house on the left, the beyond, and Tenebrae, others are just awful films. So the Video Nasty pedigree isn’t necessarily a seal of quality, but instead, it’s just a reminder that something happens in the film that made the censors deem it as too violent or grotesque for the average moviegoer.
Now even though I haven’t seen all 72 of these films, I’ve seen the majority of them and have reviewed over a dozen of them. And tonight, I get to do it all over again. Should the Slayer from 1982 be remembered more than just its video nasty title? Let’s find out together. Welcome to the hellbound horror show.

Mystics in Bali has grown a cult following over the years. It’s one of those weird films that people who like weird, bad films tend to gravitate towards. This was an Indonesian film made for a western audience. These are very Eastern ideas and a very eastern story trying to be adapted and translated to a western market. Let’s just say some things were lost in translation.

Big killer animals in film is nothing new and was a huge overused trope in 1950’s drive-in cinema. You got Giant Leeches, killer shrews, Giant Gila Monster, and who could forget Them. You know. Them, the giant ants.
But let’s be honest, it was until 1975's Jaws that the subgenre got critical acclaim. There was a formula and movies like Orca, grizzly, and Pirahana, were made to cash in on Jaw’s success. Alligator isn’t far removed from that either. The inspiration is clear, but Alligator does some interesting things that elevate it slightly above a mere rip-off.

Clive Baker created one of the most iconic horror villains with Mahogany, the evil killer butcher in The Midnight Meat Train. Originally found in The Books of Blood anthology of short stories, this 2008 horror film starring Bradley Cooper may be one of the best Barker adaptations to date. I'm breaking down the film, including everything we know about previous attempts to adapt the story, to learning about Mahogany, as well as explaining the ending and comparing it to the original short story.
