A very decent and cheap alternative is phosphate-free granular dishwasher detergent used with hot water. Typically you do not want to buy your pool chemicals from anywhere other than a pool supply store, but for washing your cartridge filters, a cheap granular phosphate-free dishwasher detergent is completely acceptable. However, if you have scale that needs to be cleaned from your filter, start with the detergent soak and cleaning, THEN you can proceed to removing the scale with a very mild acid wash. If done in the wrong order your cartridges will become unusable because the oils will be baked into the paper of the filter.

Many residential pools in North America are still not compliant with the safety standard established with this law.
