Parable of the Good Samaritan Explained
I want to read to you the parable of the Good Samaritan and then explain its real significance and why Jesus gave this parable. This is found in Luke chapter 10:25-37 “And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it? So, he answered and said, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, WANTING TO JUSTIFY HIMSELF, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise, a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So, he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So, which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves? And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” When Luke uses the term lawyer he is not speaking about a government official, he is speaking about a Pharisee, or a scribe or a Levite, someone of the religious order who studies the Law of Moses. This man who was a Lawyer would KNOW the Bible (Torah/Prophets etc.) He would also most likely have a group of people under Him, exactly identical to a pastor today. (In the sense of supposed spiritual authority) It would be as if that pastor of a church came to Jesus and tried to justify his church ministry saying, “Well, who is my congregation? Who are those that I should help, Jesus? Because if it is those within my congregation I help them every day. I pay my tithe. I help out the widows and orphans, I feed the flock daily Lord Jesus. Am I not justified? Am I not going to heaven?” When Jesus gave the parable however, the pastor (priest) and the pastors youth pastor (Levite) where the ones that walked right by the man laying on the road, they did not stop to help. At the end of the parable, Jesus says to the lawyer, “Which of these three do you think were a neighbor?” He has to answer, “It was the one who helped.” The guy laying on the ground almost dead represents a prophet of God, one who really knows the truth and obeys the Lord with all of his heart. Those who beat him up, the robbers and thieves are the supposed children of God. They are the priests, the Levites, the pastors, the youth pastors, the Christians in church, the whole religious order that thinks they are doing the work of God. But when they walk by a true child of God they offer NO HELP. They walk quickly on by on the OTHER side of the road and they could care less to help. But the most unlikely person, someone who is not a church-goer, someone who the church people consider a bad person, a Samaritan, he is the one why might help. Those who are approved by the Lord are those who actually HELP IN THE LORDS WORK! The pastors today are NOT doing the Lord’s work. They are like the thieves and the robbers who are beating up the children of God. Are you like the Good Samaritan? Or are you like the Priest the Levite in the parable? May the grace of Jesus be with you.
