The Extreme in Contemporary Culture: States of Vulnerability
Author: Pramod K. Nayar File Type: pdf This is a study of vulnerability as a dominant cultural discourse today, especially as it manifests in extreme cultures. These are cultural practices and representations of humans in risky, painful or life-threatening conditions where the limits of their humanity are tested, and producing heightened sensations of pain and pleasure. Extreme cultures in this book signal the social ontology of humans where, in specific conditions, vulnerability becomes helplessness. We see in these cultures the exploitation of the bodys immanent vulnerability in involuntary conditions of torture or deprivation, the encounter with extreme situations where the body is rendered incapacitated from performing routine functions due to structural conditions or in a voluntary embracing of risk in sporting events wherein the body pits itself against enormous forces and conditions. The Extreme in Contemporary Culture studies vulnerability across various conditions torture, disease, accident. It studies spaces of vulnerability and helplessness, the aesthetics and representations of vulnerability, the extreme in the everyday and, finally, the witnessing of (in)human extremes. Extreme cultures suggest shared precarity as a foundational condition of humanity. A witness culture emerges through the cultural discourse of vulnerability, the representations of the victim andor survivor, and the accounts of witnesses. They offer, in short, an entire new way of speaking about and classifying the human.

How the words we useand dont usereinforce dominant cultural norms Why is the term openly gay so widely used but openly straight is not? What are the unspoken assumptions behind terms like male nurse, working mom, and white trash? Offering a revealing and provocative look at the word choices we make every day without even realizing it, Taken for Granted exposes the subtly encoded ways we talk about race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, social status, and more. In this engaging and insightful book, Eviatar Zerubavel describes how the words we use--such as when we mark the best female basketball player but leave her male counterpart unmarkedprovide telling clues about the things many of us take for granted. By marking womens history or Black History Month, we are also reinforcing the apparent normality of the history of white men. When we mark something as being special or somehow noticeable, that which goes unmarkedsuch as maleness, whiteness, straightness, and able-bodiednessis assumed to be ordinary by default. Zerubavel shows how this tacit normalizing of certain identities, practices, and ideas helps to maintain their cultural dominanceincluding the power to dictate what others take for granted. A little book about a very big idea, Taken for Granted draws our attention to what we implicitly assume to be normaland in the process unsettles the very notion of normality. **

p Segoe UI, serif 13pxIn his Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, Hegel treats the religions of the world under the rubric the determinate religion. This is a part of his corpus that has traditionally been neglected since scholars have struggled to understand what philosophical work it is supposed to do. In Hegels Interpretation of the Religions of the World, Jon Stewart argues that Hegels rich analyses of Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Egyptian and Greek polytheism, and the Roman religion are not simply irrelevant historical material, as is often thought. Instead, they play a central role in Hegels argument for what he regards as the truth of Christianity. Hegel believes that the different conceptions of the gods in the world religions are reflections of individual peoples at specific periods in history. These conceptions might at first glance appear random and chaotic, but there is, Hegel claims, a discernible logic in them. Simultaneously, a theory of mythology, history, and philosophical anthropology, Hegels account of the world religions goes far beyond the field of philosophy of religion. The controversial issues surrounding his treatment of the non-European religions are still very much with us today and make his account of religion an issue of continued topicality in the academic landscape of the twenty-first century. p Segoe UI, serif 13px**font face=Segoe UI, serif size=2bJon Stewartb is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy at the Slovak Academy of Sciences. This book contains the five important pamphlets published by Ricardo, as selected by E. C. K. Gonner. The five pamphlets are writings of great importance, because both of the subjects with which they deal and of the principles laid down in their treatment of those subjects. ...I feel that the trend of economic thought and the new importance attached to economic inquiry make more valuable than ever the study of a writer whose attitude was so disinterested and who, despite his shortcomings, sought in all he wrote, on the one hand to elucidate facts by reference to principles and on the other hand to build up out of the data at his command a system of coherent thought. - E. In this vibrant work, which is ideal for both teaching and learning, Apoorva Khare and Anna Lachowska explain the mathematics essential for understanding and appreciating our quantitative world. They show with examples that mathematics is a key tool in the creation and appreciation of art, music, and literature, not just science and technology. The book covers basic mathematical topics from logarithms to statistics, but the authors eschew mundane finance and probability problems. Instead, they explain how modular arithmetic helps keep our online transactions safe, how logarithms justify the twelve-tone scale commonly used in music, and how transmissions by deep space probes are similar to knights serving as messengers for their traveling prince. Ideal for coursework in introductory mathematics and requiring no knowledge of calculus, Khare and Lachowskas enlightening mathematics tour will appeal to a wide audience. Heavens Gate is probably the most discussed, least seen film in modern movie history. Its notoriety is so great that its title has become a generic term for disaster, for ego run rampant, for epic mismanagement, for wanton extravagance. It was also the film that brought down one of Hollywoods major studiosUnited Artists, the company founded in 1919 by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, D. W. Griffith, and Charlie Chaplin. Steven Bach was senior vice president and head of worldwide production for United Artists at the time of the filming of Heavens Gate, and apart from the director and producer, the only person to witness the films evolution from beginning to end. Combining wit, extraordinary anecdotes, and historical perspective, he has produced a landmark book on Hollywood and its people, and in so doing, tells a story of human absurdity that would have made Chaplin proud.**From The New YorkerThe best account of American moviemaking in the age of conglomerate control of the studios.
