Yonah Mountain boasts some incredible views! It's also known for being an incredibly crowded and highly trafficked destination, but Nora and I managed to find a window of peace and quiet up there. Despite the disadvantages that come with popularity, this trail is a great 5 mile out and back trip for beginner and experienced backpackers alike. My best advice is: try to go on a weekday. Be sure to check out the trail journal/trip report for more info and stories from this overnight adventure. You can read that HERE: seagrasstosassafras.com/post/yonah

Need a little Christmas cheer? Today we’re picking out a tree at a local tree farm and getting the pups’ reaction to it. Will they be curious of the big pointy stranger or totally indifferent? Let’s find out!

The day had a bit of a rough start, but after a quick detour to the Shining Rock things were looking up. All I had left today was make it to camp at Cold Mountain... but out here things are easier said than done.

I hope you enjoy this three day adventure through the wild but oh so wonderful landscape of Pisgah NF’s Pisgah ranger district. There were a number of obstacles and surprises along the way, but nothing me and my trusty companion Barrett couldn’t handle. Grandfather Mountain has a very special place in my heart (right next to the Foothills Trail) This makes three years in a row hiking the absolutely breathtaking trails the state park & attraction have to offer. And I'm no where near tired of it yet! With each visit their tagline rings even truer. I have no doubt I could visit 100 more times and still be amazed! Here, "Wonders Never Cease"

Hey friends! Long distance hikes can be an incredible adventure, but sometimes it's hard to know where to start. So I wanted to share some of the things I did to prepare for my FHT thru-hike. I hope you find this helpful! Especially if you've been dying to hike this trail, but a little overwhelmed by all the planning.
You can find videos of my thru-hike, pictures, and extra details from my trail journal HERE on my website and blog: https://www.seagrasstosassafras.com/blog/categories/foothills

Barrett and I made a three day loop through Gorges State Park. Starting at Frozen Creek access we followed Auger Hole trail to the Foothills Trail counter clockwise to Lake Jocassee. This trip was chock full of firsts for Barrett, first time on an overnight trip, first time doing water crossings. He did a great job, and I couldn't be prouder of him.
The second half of our adventure is coming soon!
I had so much fun with the Bluegrass theme of the Art Loeb trip that I decided to go with a Jazz and Blues theme this time around. No trail journal and playlist for this one. Sorry! I think if I did do a playlist though, it would just be George Thorogood's greatest hits with "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" tossed in there three or four times. Such a ridiculous song; makes me laugh every time!

Thanks so much for watching this highlight reel from our basecamping trip to Panthertown Valley. There’s no itinerary or trail journal for this outing. On our trip we checked out Schoolhouse Falls, Tranquility Point, and Sandbar Pool. I know y’all are probably going to ask for the location of our campsite, but I’m going to keep this card close to the vest ;) Sorry!
We used both Burt Kornegay’s "A Guide's Guide to Panthertown" and Gaia GPS. In our personal experience the guide was worth investing in for planning purposes, but Gaia GPS was far more helpful when actually navigating the area. Again, that was just our experience. You can purchase the guide here: https://www.panthertownmap.com/order/guides-guide
Heads up: An order was signed into effect May of 2022 now requiring any food or refuse be contained in a bear-resistant container (approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee). You can read the actual order here: fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1025064.pdf You can also see the list of bear resistant containers approved by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee here: igbconline.org/programs/bear-resistant-products/ *Ursak Major and Allmitey are on List A. If you don’t have an approved container you can utilize one of the three bear storage lockers in Panthertown. Supposedly there are plans to install more of them in the area. Read about that here: fs.usda.gov/detail/nfsnc/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD1025111 Hope this info helps!

Hey friends, leading up to the first Art Loeb thru-hike video coming up I decided to rerelease or revise the video of my first time on the Art Loeb.
This was also my first attempt at backpacking and one of my first videos...
If you aren't familiar with the backstory the plan was to backpack Graveyard Fields to Black Balsam Knob and camp up on the ridge. Well... seeing as how this was my first ever overnight trip there were a lot of things I failed to take into consideration and it didn't exactly go well.
Also COMING SOON: this wasn't my only misadventure on the Art Loeb. I actually tried and failed doing an overnight near Shining Rock one year later. (sorry, no videos of that fiasco) I plan to do a video comparing those two trips to the thru-hike. Kind of like a what went wrong, what went right. So in between the thru-hike videos coming this month be on the look out for that!
