This new 2-in-1 polynuc from http://bshoneybees.co.uk looks like a useful piece of kit for any beekeeper who needs a flexible 6-frame nuc box that can be divided into two 3-frame sections for mating queens or just nursing a couple of small colonies. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy7CRMdXAh4
Tapping birch trees for sap is a long-standing tradition in northern Europe, but is little practised in Britain. Yet birch sap contains essential amino acids and bio-available minerals, which are beneficial to us - but what about the bees? Could our bees benefit from a spring boost of birch sap?
And then there is the eco-floor: what would happen if we added birch sawdust, shavings, bark, etc to the inside of a hive?
That is one of the projects I have in mind for this Spring.

Time-lapse sequence showing a swarm moving into a top bar hive bait box (a small TBH of about 32 litres capacity).
This swarm landed on an acacia tree in Totnes market place on Friday 7th June 2013. About an hour later, it took off, flew over the buildings on the north side of the High Street and into this bait hive, which had some empty honeycomb in it.

New beekeepers are often told that the use of a smoker is essential. It is not: I haven't used one for about 15 years and I have 30-50 colonies. A water mist spray is a perfectly viable alternative to smoke and is much easier, cleaner and healthier for you and for the bees.

Sometimes, even good bees go bad. Their owners get fed up of being ambushed and chased down the garden, and the hive just has to go.
Here's how we dismantled and moved a BIG colony in a top bar hive...

My experiments with the electric field meter have prompted me to test a gadget I built some time ago, which is designed to detect electromagnetic radiation in the vlf band (3-30kHz) and make it audible.
I am not clear what is going on here, but it may have something to do with the swarm's electrical contact with earth via the plant they are hanging from.
Please post below if you have a theory!

At this time of year, workers withdraw the free passes issued to drones during the summer and refuse to let them into the hive. If they resist, they are escorted from the premises and the stubborn ones receive the ultimate sanction.

Before bees swarm, they send out scouts to look for a new home. It may not be obvious what this looks like to beginners, so in this video I will show you the difference between an active hive and one that is being checked out as a potential home.
