"THE
the-new-spirit-(1942),-donald-duck
This is a classic American government propaganda cartoon by Walt Disney Studios in 1942, shown in movie theaters across the country in the days before television. Walt Disney Studios had been taken over by the US military to create training videos, and the Secretary of the Treasury (the principal officer over the IRS) took the opportunity to commission this special Donald Duck cartoon to be shown nationwide to the public before any movie the people went to watch. Donald Duck was the second most popular cartoon character of the time, and sported a US Navy uniform.
The Donald Duck character was enlisted to make the "new spirit" of voluntarily paying income taxes seem like the most patriotic thing a good citizen could do. The last half of the cartoon (after Donald Duck runs to Washington, D.C. to pay his taxes) makes the American warships and fighter planes seem heroic, and the Japanese and German vessels and planes seem villainous.
Highlights:
Introductory song: "...we will fight and never will we cease,
until we win our victory and everlasting peace." (Endless war to obtain endless peace?)
Voice on radio: "...it's your privilege. Not just your duty, but your PRIVILEGE! To help your government by paying your tax, and paying it promptly."
Donald Duck: "Oh, what's the big hurry?"
Voice: "What's the big hurry? Your country is AT WAR! Your country needs taxes for guns, taxes for ships, taxes for democracy, TAXES TO BEAT THE AXIS!" (Short for "axis of evil", as opposed to the "allies for freedom".)
