Assessing the Viking 6400 Series Sewing Machine. (Husqvarna 2000 model 64 40) I decided to combine the buyer's guide and assessment video into one since they are very similar. Index below. This video covers most models in the 6000 range (2000 range). There may be slight variances between models so bear that in mind when working on these. If in doubt just stop and also make sure not to force anything. If excessive force is required then something is not right and it's probably a good idea to take the machine to your local repair agent or seek advice. I assess this machine and explain some of the things to look out for if you're looking to buy one of these, or if you already own one. Maintenance is very important in keeping these machines running. These machines are very well made in Sweden and last very well if looked after. The first thing to check is for a split cam stack which is plastic and can split at any time. I think the splitting is generally caused by lack of maintenance so if the machine is looked after, the cam stack should last quite some time. If the cam stack is split then a decision needs to be made as whether to continue because although the part is available, it is relatively expensive and there is some time involved in replacing it. If you decide to continue, the next thing to check is the take up lever as there is a drive bearing that can fail due to it coming free of its holder. This is also likely to be caused by lack of maintenance. I show how to remove the covers to gain access to the motor and other working parts. Another thing to check are the motor brushes. Like any motor with brushes, if the brushes are left to wear down completely the motor will be severely damaged. Once the rear cover is removed the brushes are fairly easy to check. Warning! Make sure you do not plug the power plug into the machine while the back cover is removed. There are areas in behind the cover that become live at mains voltage if plugged in. The control dials, knobs and internal devices that can seize up and it's just a matter of getting oil into them and freeing them up. Once these checks have been made, more than likely the machine will be a good one and if looked after should provide years of reliable sewing. A full test is the only way to know if there are any other issues with the machine but there's generally not much else that goes wrong with this model.
