When I perform a heavy pruning of a shrub in my garden, it can be a little nerve-wracking to cut low into old wood. Will the shrub recover from such a hard pruning? There are some particulars around the right season and the variety of plant, but my general experience has been that a healthy deciduous shrub will recover quite nicely from even a deep pruning. There are dormant buds down low on the stems of most shrubs. In this video, I'll show you three examples of the results of my heavy pruning this year and last.

If you're wondering when you should prune your rose, the most common advice is "In the late winter or early spring, just as it's coming out of dormancy". The longer answer is: "It depends..." In this video, I'll go through a flowchart you can use to decide if it's the best time to prune your roses.
Here's a link to the flowchart on my website (free): https://www.fraservalleyrosefarm.com/when-to-prune-roses-flowchart/

Deadheading is a simple pruning technique to help cleanup your roses after a flush of blooms - removing those spent flowers also encourages the shrub to return to flowering sooner. In this video, I'll show you how to deadhead individual blooms as well as cluster-flowering roses. A bit later on in the video, I show discuss how to deadhead and stage your perennials - also in an effort to reduce the "pause" after blooming.

I have bindweed everywhere along the margins of my farm - and it's very difficult to get rid of this plant! Also sometimes called by the name of its botanical cousin, morning glory, bindweed develops an extensive root system to spread in the garden. In this video, I'll discuss strategies to fight back against this perennial weed.

If you notice chewing damage on your rose, you may wonder what's eating your plant? Let's have a look at those holes in rose leaves. Careful inspection may reveal the culprit, and in this video I'll discuss some of the usual suspects: deer, rabbit, leafcutter bees, rose slug sawfly larvae, slugs & snails, Japanese Beetle, Rose Chafer and Rose budworm.

Veggie gardeners know the value of companion planting, but the very same concepts apply to selecting good companion plants in your ornamental garden beds. Roses make excellent neighbors, and they benefit greatly from the biological diversity of sharing beds with other plant families. In this video, I talk a bit about the carrot, daisy, mustard and mint families - which make wonderful additions to the rose garden. Aside from supporting beneficial insects and stable pest populations, companions help to round out your ornamental display with different colors, textures, bloom form and timing.
