Switzerland was a bit late in the game when it came to universally adopting rifled longarms, and the path do to so was long and tortuous. We explore this journey and also the service cartridge. Once the 1859 modification was approved, the service life of the musket was short due to the arrival of a state-of-the-art 1863 infantry percussion rifle in 10.4mm, which itself was upgraded mid-production to breechloading using the Milbank-Amsler conversion from 1867, shortly before the introduction of the Vetterli.

Since the Manky Mauser Kar98k had a somewhat extreme extractor that was giving him problems, Bloke took a file and a stone to it. Here's the whys and wherefores of what he did, and a discussion on controlled vs push feed.
There's a Lindybeige cameo in this vid too!

Extra video! Swiss bunkers!
Bloke and the Chap take their kids on a WW2/Cold War bunker open day in the Berner Oberland, taking in the artillery emplacement in Krattigen, the command post above Hondrich, and the place-to-be-defended-at-all-costs, at Einigen. Lots to interest troglodytes here, and there's some interesting firearms on display too, including an MP43/44, MG11, several LMG25's, a fortress-adapted Stgw 57, and some other bangsticks.

A bit long this one, but I thought some people might like to see the whole process, and how some rifles will really like some ammo and not others.
Here's Bloke's "Minty Mauser", which is a Spanish M43 (kinda almost VZ24 / Kar98k configuration), with a scope mount and turned down bolt handle done by Hege. It's built as a 7.62 NATO / .308 Win rifle rather than an 8x57, but they didn't bother to fix the magazine to run it properly, and a quirk of the M43 receiver design means that it doesn't eject reliably either.
But it seems to rather like that Winchester Supreme 168gn match ammo!
It is NOT a "Spanish Small-Ring Mauser" - those are Mauser 93 actions and have a habit of not holding .308 Win. This is a Mauser 98 action!

The Swiss Sturmgewehr 57 (aka SIG 510) is an interesting and unique piece - far heavier and more awkward than its contemporaries, there are however very interesting reasons why it ended up like that. In this video, Dale explains the whys and wherefores of the Stgw 57 design, which fully explain how and why it ended up like it did.
