Drawing the Lines: Matt Walsh, Serene Jones, Ron Underwood
Did a live DL from London (Westminster) today via Zoom (worked really well!) discussing how we “draw the lines,” using three examples to provide us with some perspective for this challenging discussion. We looked at Matt Walsh, Roman Catholic, who was interviewed on the CrossPolitic program last week. Then we looked at Serene Jones, head of Union Theological Seminary, and comments she made in a recent NYT article. Then we looked at comments made directly to me and about me by Ron Underwood, a Denver area resident who, I think, would find John Calvin insufficiently Calvinistic. How do we know what is definitional of the faith? What about inconsistencies? Traditions? Are Arminians all lost and going to hell? Are Calvinists going to hell if they are not sufficiently hard-nosed about it? What about Rome? Lots of things to think about today from London! Covered my two weeks overseas with lots of side-trips and commentary on related issues, and toward the end focused upon some issues that came up in my debate with Zakir Hussein on the crucifixion, especially John 17:5 and Psalm 22:16. Also showed off a new Bible, a Polish translation of The Roman Catholic Controversy, my Bates hat from London, and the upgrading of the DL to full warp power! Lots of stuff on a 90+ minute episode today. Visit the store at https://doctrineandlife.co/

Talked a lot about some of the amazing statements being made after the installation of the new regime in Washington. Looked at statements from Lecrae, Charlie Dates, and Anthony Bradley as well, especially as the latter two attacked Virgil Walker. Also looked at Russell Moore’s article on how to pray on inauguration day. Had to record and upload as the net went down in our entire neighborhood (though it came back up during the show, we just pressed on rather than restarting). Today on an edition of Radio Free Geneva (which included our newly re-done Radio Free Geneva theme!) I reviewed a sermon by Pastor Eric Hankins preached September 26, 2013 at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary on the subject of election. In this sermon Hankins basically seeks to reduce the concept of election to merely a call to service after salvation, but he never addresses in a helpful fashion the heart of the matter: monergism vs. synergism, whether God's grace saves, or makes man savable, etc.

Did a jumbo edition of the DL today reporting on my trip to South Africa along with my attendance at the Gagnon/Kirk debate on homosexuality. Spent nearly the first hour on the homosexuality topic (interspersed with comments about South African Rooibus Tea) and then moved on to the Muslim debates in the last half hour.

We provided clarification on a number of points today, starting with Bruce Jenner’s reported “marriage” to a trans-gender “woman” 47 years his junior. Then we provided clarification on Mitt Romney’s ironic tweet about “religious bigots.” Next we provided clarification on an Islamic video accusing me of inconsistency regarding the Trinity and the fear of the Lord. But the majority of the program was taken up providing clarification about “colorblind theology” and the discussions in social media regarding the Lord’s table, “black spaces,” and the call for an ecumenical council to declare me a heretic! Last DL for me for a while as I leave for Africa tomorrow, but Rich says he has “plans” for others to sit in, but won’t tell me about them (which is frightening). So stay tuned! Spent the first half of the show talking about mortality and the societal choices we have made regarding danger and death. Then we talked about books to read during this time where there are no sports, no movies, etc., and then we looked (quickly) at what Leighton Flowers said about the issue of faith in Romans 8. Somewhere in there we talked about the division over whether to meet or not in the church during these days, as well as about learning Greek and Hebrew. We also noted that we plan on doing another program tomorrow, so join us, same time! Visit the store at https://doctrineandlife.co/

First program back after nearly half a month on the road! Gave a report on the trip to Ukraine (and stops along the way), then moved on to other issues, including playing clips from David Allen (calling for fairness and accuracy of representation—so I am calling for him to be fair and accurate as well, and withdraw his false "hyper-Calvinism" charge) and Shawn McCraney (we will be examining his recent denials of the Trinity and his attacks upon the churches in his area on Thursday with Pastor Jason Wallace). I moved from there to looking at a few articles I had saved for discussion over the past few weeks, including one by real, honest-to-goodness, in-the-flesh hyper-Calvinists attacking me for not being one of them (ironic, no?), and another on the fact that Rome has, in fact, completely changed her teachings on religious liberties and freedom over the centuries. A wide ranging program indeed! Great to be back, and again, my thanks to John Samson for keeping the howling hordes of Calvinists at bay while I was gone! Well done ol' chap! Cheerio and pip pip and all! Just chuffed to bits!

Talked about a few new books coming out at the start of the program, but spent the majority of the hour talking to callers about a wide variety of topics such as the atonement, the command of the gospel, election in Romans 11, the ordo salutis, etc. Went about fifteen minutes long to try to get everyone in.

Pastor John Samson is back to guest host on today’s program: Imagine the scenario. You’ve had an amazing conversation with someone which has led to their conversion to Christ. You have just an hour with them. After that, you may never see them again. What are the most important things you would wish him to know? What follows is the answer to that question.
