Divinyls - Boys in Town ( Live NYC 1986) R.I.P Chrissy 1959-2013
The Divinyls first hit the rock music scene between the eyes in 1981 with the release of their single 'Boys in Town'. Late singer Christine Amphlett was a striking sea of contrasts, mimicking the stage presence of Angus Young of AC/DC in her short pants Aussie school girl uniform. Long the preserve of ultra-masculinity, Australian rock had found a feminine voice and presence that was both startling and liberating.

Said Amphlett of her own onstage look in her autobiography " My idols had always been the unsafe, the dangerous, the edgy, like the punks, Iggy Pop, Keith Richards, Debbie Harry and Jerry Lee Lewis who, when I saw him perform some years later, I was convinced was the devil. I hated self-righteousness. I hated middle-class smugness and bloated self-esteem.

There was something about my body and my sexuality, my physicality, that threatened audiences. Looking as I did made my performances more confronting. Mine was not a safe body, not a doll's body. It was real. I had large breasts, I had long legs, and though small I was fit and powerful. My fringe, my pout, my outfit, my voice ... the uniform, the threatening props.

As that aggressive, seen-and-done-it-all and very well-developed schoolgirl from the bad side of town, I could rebel against my straight, middle-class girlhood, against the prospect of my father's dream for me, a life married to a TV newsreader, any newsreader."

The impact of the release of 'Boys in Town', along with its iconic video clip, can scarcely be underestimated in its effect on popular music and the place of women in it. Chrissy Amphlett paved the way for a generation of strong, articulate women who demanded attention and weren't afraid to say it.

The band made waves in the US with their performance in front of a huge crowd at the 1983 US Fest in California. The Divinyls continued to tour & pursue fame in the clubs, and 10 years after Boys In Town, struck platinum paydirt with the provocative hit song "I Touch Myself". They became one of Australia's most successful bands of all time, the track 'Science Fiction' was voted as one of the top 30 Australian Songs in 2001, and in 2006 they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Amphlett died in April 2013 at age 53 in New York after a battle with Multiple Sclerosis and Breast Cancer
