Tyranny of a Construct: Feudalism and its Discontents
Popular notions of medieval society and institutions often combine anachronistic concepts and ideas. We see 15th-17th century aesthetics, 16th-17th century institutions, and 19th century projections onto 500 years before. Many myths, like those of cumbersome armor, dominance of the sword over other weapons, and a hatred of ranged weapons, have already been conclusively been debunked and refuted. However, only a few niche channels have ever discussed Medieval societal organization. In this introduction, we note that Medieval societies were heterogeneous, not just between but even within realms and domains. A king’s power was not absolute, elites and nobility were informal and were neither legally nor formally hereditary, and popular legitimacy formed an important role in succession. Beyond this top-bottom view, societies and communities were largely autonomous, had their own leaders chosen by whatever method, and relied more on their members than governance by a duke, or count, or even by the king.

Throughout the 12th century, liquid money increased in circulation as Medieval Europe faced economic and population expansion. Society also saw increased commerce and trade, in what Medievalists call the “Commercial Revolution” of the Middle Ages. These changes led to, among other things, disputes over land, more land clearances, and a growing land market. In England especially, the land market became mature enough that financial speculation and investment became real activities in the Middle Ages. Financial activity regarding land and property rose so much that one could argue that the very first Real Estate bubble happened in Medieval England.

Popular notions of the medieval guilds rests on the misconception that they formed cartels, monopolies, and oligopolies. Some have even gone so far as to suggest they were a medieval equivalent to licensing and regulatory authorities, or to labor unions. This misconception is an old one, with examples dating back to Adam Smith. Of course, Adam Smith was talking about guilds in his own time in 1776. As we should know, two institutions with the same name are not necessarily the same in function or purpose. The guilds are one example of an institution that underwent a substantial change through time. They went from free and voluntary associations of likeminded workers and craftsmen in Medieval times, to restrictive regulatory agencies under royal charter in Early Modern times.
This video was inspired by Shadiversity's video on guilds, where he repeats popular misconceptions despite aiming to debunk them.

In 1173, Henry the Young King of England rose in rebellion against his father, King Henry II. Before he mustered soldiers, however, the young king’s retinue reminded him that he had never been knighted. Henry accepted their advice, and he brought William Marshall—the best knight in all Europe—to knight him. Yet Marshall had neither land nor anything else—just his chivalry.
Here we see powerful men proudly wear the knight’s belt together with landless newcomers like William Marshall. Such a sight, however, was unimaginable generations earlier. Knights had begun neither as genteel nor cultured. In Latin, knights were called milites—soldiers. In English, these soldiers were called servants—cnichts. From mere bodyguards and private thugs, knighthood took on glamorous appeal. At this point we must ask: how did the knights become a group separate from “common” people?

In the years 1314 and 1315, great rains swelled over Northern Europe. Many thought that the great flood of Noah’s time had returned. “There was such an inundation of waters,” one German wrote, “that it seemed as though it was the Flood.”
The following seven years found the worst of hungers afflict Northern Europe. No matter what everyone did, they could not escape what they all fell in: a disaster unheard of among living men.
In Part 1, we discuss the Famine's origins amid a time of growing turmoil and turbulence. While wars raged across an increasingly prosperous Europe, a natural calamity brewed in the background. Some scholars suspect this to be a volcano's doing; others see it as part of the encroaching Little Ice Age. Whatever the cause, Europe's wars and power plays found themselves in the midst of onrushing cold and wet - with consequences to come.

In a previous video, we discussed misconceptions regarding Medieval times and Feudalism that came from outdated concepts and notions in Medieval studies. One subject that we discussed involved conceptions of statehood and political communities. The old Medievalist understanding claimed that Medieval society recognized no division between “public” and “private” spheres of life, and no conception of the res publica, or public affairs existed among citizens and subjects. As we will discuss, however, the political community as a body united in purpose of mutual well-being was the dominant political theory at that time.
For this part, we will discuss what Medievalists thought of “statehoood”, and corresponding Medieval realities.
