DO YOUR BEARS HIBERNATE? Even though we answer this question A LOT - it is still the number one question we are asked this time of year, (up to 4 or 5 times a day sometimes )- so I’ll answer it again for the new folks! (thank you to our long time fans for helping me respond to these in the comments lately- you rock!) Bears in captivity usually do NOT hibernate. They do slow down a GREAT deal though, going from eating about 30 lbs of food a day to about 5 lbs a day. They also sleep much of the day and are reluctant to expend too much energy. They do however usually get up every day, go outside, take a little walk around and then go back inside. Our black bear Frankie is our biggest “winter sleeper” and he is the least interested in activity or food. But it isn’t true that all bears hibernate.
