For your listening enjoyment, a complete reading of The Gospel of Thomas. Many scholars and historians label this text as a gnostic heresy, while other strange fringes of Christianity pull new-age, confusing messages from it. However, most of these sayings are variants of what you'll find in the New Testament, and scholars must admit that they can't know for sure when these sayings were originally written and compiled. They may have been written before the book of John and Matthew. As for my thoughts? Not much is known about early Christian sects, because it seems there were many factions and differing beliefs about Jesus, God's nature, and what that means for us. Most of these early Christians were censored and killed. And because we know so little, how can we be sure they were heretics? Just like the scribes and pharisees in biblical times, I believe scholars and many pastors are no different today. They only see the world, and live inside their intellect, and are blind to spiritual truth. We aren't to look to anyone else for spiritual authority, but look within ourselves, and be guided through life by the Holy Spirit. I was amazed after pondering over Thomas many times. At first, I thought many of the sayings were strange, but more and more of them make complete sense. Though some sayings are unusual and cryptic, the truth shines out in most of these sayings—and as I said, you can trace a majority of them to the cannon gospels. I was not around when the Bible or Thomas was written, and neither is anyone reading it today. Rather than being guided by the intellect, and turning to scholars and endless different translations for spiritual truth, I believe we should lean on nothing but God himself.
