Meet the Iraqi journalist famous for throwing his shoes at US President George Bush during a press conference in Baghdad in 2008 while shouting, "This is a kiss goodbye from the Iraqi people, you dog!" The incident made the 39-year-old journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi a hero for millions of people who opposed the US occupation of Iraq.
The reporter was jailed and tortured for "assaulting a foreign leader." Large protests erupted across Iraq and in other Arab countries, demanding his release. His sentence was reduced to one year, and he was eventually released after nine months in prison, although he had to go into exile.
The shoe-throwing against Bush reflected the anger of Iraqis over the 2003 US-led invasion, which killed 1,200,000 million Iraqis, according to the highest estimates. In this interview, al-Zaidi explains his experience with the occupation.

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a major offensive against the army’s last stronghold in Darfur, one of the largest regions in Sudan with a pre-war population of almost 10 million. According to Doctors Without Borders, more than 130 people died in a single hospital during the RSF siege in el-Fasher, and more than 1,000 people were injured.
The Sudanese army announced that it had survived the offensive and confirmed the withdrawal of the RSF from West Darfur. Artillery fire between the army and the RSF has escalated, resulting in further civilian casualties.
The UN warns that there is a growing risk of genocide in the Sudanese region of Darfur. Human Rights Watch reports widespread war crimes by the RSF against the ethnic Massalit and other non-Arab populations in and around El Geneina.
According to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, more than 14,790 people have been killed since the outbreak of the Sudanese civil war in 2023.

How does Israel defend itself against the genocide accusation in the International Criminal Court? One tactic: It simply links the applicant South Africa to Gaza's armed groups. Today marks the second day of the historic court case centered around Israel's legal team's response to yesterday's indictment of South Africa.
Israel's responses focused on critical questions that have been addressed by countless investigations and reports since the beginning of the war, such as the question of "self-defense." ICJ President Joan Donoghue ended the two-day hearing by saying the court would announce its decision in the coming days.

Turkish police arrested several people at a press conference organized by the People's Democratic Party (HDP) in Istanbul, according to local media. Dozens protested the government's response to the devastating earthquakes, saying "they didn't lift a finger."
Footage shows Istanbul deputy Musa Piroglu of the HDP in front of police barricades accusing them of blocking protests. "The state [...] is massing the police on the ground to prevent a press statement." Piroglu wrote on Twitter.
Anger towards President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is growing in Turkey, as more people accuse his government of blocking aid and rescue efforts on the ground and exploting the state of emergency to repress government critics.

Hundreds of thousands of French workers are coming out for the 10th national day of strike and protest this year, as the resistance to President Emmanuel Macron's hated and anti-democratic pension bill shows no sign of abating.
Strikes today are hitting oil refineries, bin collections, rail transport, air travel and schools. Larger numbers of young people are expected to join the protests compared to last week as anger mounts over excessive police violence witnessed at previous days of national strike. At the same time, around 200 high schools have been blockaded by students, according to high school unions. Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says 13,000 members of the security forces will be deployed across France including 5,500 in Paris.
In between the national strike days, rolling-strikes by workers have ground large parts of the country to a halt. On Monday, the Louvre Museum in Paris was forced to close as workers walked out. Meanwhile, almost 16 per cent of fuel stations are suffering from fuel shortages as strikes continue at refineries, including at the country's largest, the TotalEnergies' Gonfreville-l'Orcher plant. Half of Paris is drowning under 8,000 tons of rubbish due to ongoing refuse workers' strikes and today, France's civil aviation authority has told airports across in several major cities to cancel 20 per cent of flights today and tomorrow.
Macron forced the bill which will raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 through the parliament without a vote using a constitutional amendment known as 49.3. He and his prime minister, Élisabeth Borne, took part in crisis talks on Monday with ministers and other senior politicians. The PM indicated that although the government was willing to open dialogue with unions on labor issues it wasn't going to scrap the pension reforms. However, Laurent Berger from the CFDT union said he would accept the offer of talks if the reforms were scrapped.

“We will never forget the moments of terror and fear we lived in this war.” –Listen to the heartbreaking words of a child in Gaza, sending his message to the world. “We, as children, only ask for our right to our childhood.”
Children in Gaza have lived their entire lives under blockade and war. To be a child in Gaza is living on borrowed time. UNICEF has described the Gaza Strip as the most dangerous place in the world to be a child.
Almost half of Gaza’s population is under 18 years old. Israel’s “war on children” has killed over 13,022 since October 7. Over one million children in the Gaza Strip now require mental health treatment. The war left at least 17,000 children in Gaza unaccompanied.

Lula pokes fun at Elon Musk amidst the current row over Twitter in Brazil. Lula calls out “billionaires” who want to escape climate change by flying to space rather than helping to end global warming and deforestation about past comments by Musk concerning Space X.
Musk has been attacking the Brazilian government on Twitter because a high court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the site to ban several accounts that have been spreading fake news and disinformation. If Twitter fails to comply, the site could be banned in the country. Musk has attempted to portray the decision as a form of political persecution.

Israel killed three journalists last night. Saeed al-Taweel, Mohammad Sobh and Hisham al-Nawajha were killed while covering the evacuation of a residential building in besieged Gaza, that was then hit by Israeli airstrikes. They were clearly identifiable as members of the press wearing distinctive journalistic markings that are discernible to Israeli aircraft.
This morning, mourners held up the blood-soaked protective vests of Sobh and al-Taweel's during their funeral procession through Gaza.
According to our colleagues in Gaza, their deaths brings the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the current war to seven.
We stand in solidarity with our Palestinian colleagues who are risking their lives to show the world the truth from the ground in occupied Palestine. #JournalismIsNotACrime
