Koos Kotzé served between 1985 and 1991 as a sergeant in the Flying Squad, Pretoria, as well as on the borders and other places. He is the author of the Mean Streets - Life in the Apartheid Police Series (Gewetenlose Strate, Afrikaans) and host of Legacy Conversations. Here he recounts some of his adventures regarding hostage survival as well as death of a spouse.
61 Mechanized Battalion was formed in 1979 and disbanded in 2005. It was a fully operational battle group actively involved in most cross-border military operations. The young men are now grey-haired and still honouring their traditions and fallen. In May 2023, they had a get-together at the Gariep Dam. If you have questions, please leave them below. We speak to Sgt Rick Lobb. He started his career as a national serviceman in 4SAI before moving to the School of Infantry where he volunteered for 32 Battalion. Once there, he passed the 32 Bn Selection, then the Recce Wing Selection and went on many operations, some of which are described here including blowing a bridge behind enemy lines. Then Rick used an RPG-7 to shoot out an enemy truck during an ambush - the first to use the RPG like that in the unit. Since then, he is known also as “RPG.” Today he is a chemical engineer with an MBA degree owning his own company. If you have questions for Rick, please leave them below. Born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape in May 1948, Arnè (Angel) Söderlund was educated at Christian Brothers College in Kimberley where he matriculated in 1965. He joined the SA Navy (Permanent Force) as a seaman in early 1966 and in April of the same year was selected for officer training and commissioned in 1970. He served until 2006 and played a major role in the navy. His lists of achievements are long and distinguished.
In this episode, he answers questions and speaks of the SA Navy ships’ names. He was closely involved in naming the new ships. Thus, he knows the stories behind them. We also ask his opinion on the Australian acquisition of nuclear submarines and other naval matters. A fascinating conversation with a man that really knows his subject. If you have questions for the Admiral, please leave them below. Subscribe and activate the bell to be informed of new episodes.
