Managing a whole state's peaks for Summits on the Air, and hacking code: Rex KE6MT talks about some of his mountain-topping hikes, his tools, inventing a meter with Arduino, and muddy trail running with ham gear. We also talk a bit about my first SOTA activation, which he unknowingly took me on.

In this brief preview episode, I demo the completed proof of concept Arduino CW Beacon on an Adafruit Trinket m0 board.
This has all been a learning experience for me, and I'm very happy to see it work from drawing schematics and planning.
Parts list:
Adafruit Trinket m0 - https://www.adafruit.com/product/3500
Half-size bread board - https://www.adafruit.com/product/64
A few jumper wires - https://amzn.to/2Wj3zYd
A 220 ohm resistor (I mistakenly called it a 430 ohm resistor in the video) - https://amzn.to/2MGZusz
A 2N3904 NPN transistor - https://amzn.to/2Mq3BJf
An LED (optional) - https://amzn.to/2JY4Qgv
A TRS (normal stereo audio) cable for the keyer jack in your radio - https://amzn.to/2WcwoAo
Any HF transceiver that can transmit CW and has a CW keyer port.

Forget perfection and just operate! Ryan NN7M indirectly challenged me with his aptitude for CW in our shared CW Academy Level 2 class back in 2018. He is into SOTA, and managed to convince his whole family to get licensed as ham radio operators. Now he's paying it forward by being an instructor for CWOps, and runs an APRS digipeater for the West Seattle area. Peer pressure in learning CW is a good thing.

In episode 37, I talk with K6ABJ Aaron, an active ham who is a comms lead for his local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). In all the episodes so far, I have not really focused with someone who is a leader for non-ham volunteer emergency response teams. Get his interesting perspective in light of the fires and emergency prep he's seen.

In this episode, I visit the W6SF Stockton Delta Amateur Radio Club ARRL Field Day 2019 setup in Lodi, California. www.w6sf.org
I've only participated in Field Day solo these past few years that I've had HF capability, and this year I wanted to go check out the ham radio club experience.
It was well attended by members of W6SF SDARC, and even a visit from a CalOES representative. We were operating 6A with 6m, 20m, 40, 80, with VHF and UHF capabilities.
Field Day is a fun time to gather with fellow hams and get giant antennas up in temporary stations to reach hams all over the world. Come visit ham radio clubs throughout the country every year on the fourth weekend of June.
If June is too far away, take a look at Winter Field Day, which is a smaller similar event in the last weekend of January.

Radio was the lifeline of many in the early- to mid-1900's. In this short episode we hear some examples of radio and possibly feel the impact of what it was like to be glued to a speaker during huge world events.
