The first tray we see in this video seems to have some creepy crawlies in it. I was thinking maybe those are pollen mites but seem kind of big for them. Anyways when I clean the cocoons it gets rid of those pests but still weird seeing them emerge from the homes I cracked open. I continue removing the cocoons in this part two of the video segment. Since I have dozens of trays I broke up the video into two parts.
As I move on I drop the cocoons in a mason jar and I fill a few of them up doing all of these trays, it will hold them until I am ready to give the cocoons a bath with distilled water and a few drops of spearmint essential oil.
I wear a face mask and try to wear gloves when cleaning the homes, as the dust, pollen and stuff gets into the air and makes my nose burn. I have seasonal allergies to pollen so opening up these homes with left over pollen in it my nose is not very happy. I try not to touch my face as well to keep the problem from being worse.
But honestly id rather clean the homes this way compared to ripping open the bamboo homes and having everything go flying from the tension. With thousands of these cocoons I am really looking forward to seeing hatch, which will confirm I am doing this the right way. As I always feel weird going into their homes and harvesting the little fragile cocoons.
Not sure if it really helps but I knock out the cap the front of the home, so I do not crush the cocoons against the wall as I use the screwdriver to dislodge them.
Vigilante 8: Second Offense Gameplay 05-13
Playing as Shelia I drove the dune buggy with the giant gattling gun on top. I found it funny I could just clip right through the wall and drop into the part of the map with the bots. Connecting the briefcases I got ambushed by the rover robot. And then almost got taken out by one of the trucks in this level. The port of Los Angeles is a tough one one for me. I find myself getting blown up alot, I think going out to the ocean to collect wrenches and special weapons is the safest way to win.
Another bot finds their special weapon and its the guided rockets coming my way. I find myself diving into the water to try to avoid the rockets. It works pretty well to be honest until I flipped over. One thing I really enjoy about this game is how many parts of the level are destructable. I find myself at the end of the game with many different looks to a map due to all the missed shots. Or taking out bots in the buildings.
Using the gattling gun and some missiles, I whammied the trash truck guy but had to run from the special missiles being fired at me. One of the missiles got me and took out my propellers so back to the land.
Right where I was dropped I had a chance to whammy a bunch of other bots though not enough to kill anyone of them. I got knocked in to the water and when redropped they are gone. Getting real low on health I make a run for the water with only one bar of health to spare.
I luckily find a wrench but get ambushed by the guided rocket bot and had to make a run for it again. I pressed the wrong button and entered first person mode and took me a minute to figure out how to get out. Once I did I collected myself some more cannon rounds.
Without good whammies I found myself not doing enough damage to take out the bots. Having the briefcase took up space and I only had two weapons so I think I was at a disadvantage.
We see more of the bee house I constructed, and a little over half way through the video at the 10:15 mark I change the angle and get a view into the bee homes straight on. I usually set up the camera to the left or the right, so I am not in the flight path of the Bees. It will cause them they queue up outside, like airplanes in a holding pattern over an airport...haha I dont mind doing this for a short amount of time but long term it would slow down the Bees productivity. They get curious about my camera and tend to get distracted when the big DSLR is in their flight path.
I noticed some Bees shared the same hole, seeing one go in and then another following. When I had the smaller 2x4 homes this would not happen as far as I know. Maybe because these wood planks with the wood routed from them are much bigger. I am curious to see the structures of their mud homes inside when two Bees build out the same hole over time.
During the few months while these Bees were out and from February through April I brought my tripod outside along with my Lumix GH3 camera, I put my Olympus MSC ED M. 60mm Macro lens on it and just let it record them working hard at their homes.
In this series I will be using a Shure VP83 LensHopper external microphone to capture the sounds of the Bees. A high pitched buzzing can be heard occasionally coming from inside the homes when the Bees are shaking off the pollen they collected. And the video is recorded at 60 FPS for smooth footage of the Bees flying and moving around. Using LBRY as my video platform, the video I rendered is what you get in playback, so there should be little to no loss when viewing.
In Part 3 we will take an even closer look into the bee house and the planks inside. Changing my macro settings we get to see the Bees entering and exiting their homes with more detail. Also a disagreement between two Bees can be observed. I guess using the same hole does not always go well for two Solitary Bees.
Searching for more minerals, I find some oxygen and carbon in some rocks. Using my mining beam I pull out those resources and make use of them for my environmental suit and as fuel for my mining beam.
The hazardous flora has oxygen in it as well, so I harvest it as its a pretty valuable resource. Some cobalt is found as well.
Down in the caves, I am glad to have a terrain manipulator. Sometimes finding a way out of the caves can be tough but by using this tool I can just make my own tunnel out of the cave. I get to my spaceship and start looking for a new location to collect more resources. Though the area I stop in is filled with predators. I flee and head towards the mineral deposit I saw from the sky.
A copper deposit was located and I started mining it. Working my way down into the ground it reduces the damage to my environmental suit. Though I spend too much time trying to collect minerals and the slow damage I take makes me almost run completely out. So to get back to my ship I tunnel under the ground until I get very close to the ship.
As I work my way underground towards my ship I find another cave. So I do some exploring as I am taking no damage in that location. After leaving I get back to topside and find some more areas to explore.
Jumping into my spaceship I fly around and find an outpost to check out. Appears to be a crashed freighter next to it as well.

Making my way through the offices early in the game, I come across headcrab zombies other aliens. Luckily I also come across a Barney, which is one of the security guards that can be your ally in the game for a short time.
Using the staircase there are those ceiling rope monsters so I kill them before I get tangled up in their rope thingies.
As we make our way through another level of offices there are many dead bodies around. Something else I noticed in this level are all the windows or glass used. Fire fights can break alot of windows and such giving the area a battered look.
We find a turret in the ceiling of one of the stairways. I hide behind a desk and wait for the right time to try to disable it. Seems no matter what I do I cannot time it right not to take damage. So I just go grab Barney after taking out the turret with my shotgun. We round a corner after and come across another zombie, Barney takes them out in a couple of shots.
I come across a second security guard, and was glad to have them when I took on the cafeteria. There were so many zombies I was glad to have the help of the two Barneys.
After filling the room with the three of us shooting we clear it out of zombies. We move our way further into the complex. Eventually I have to give up the two allies and go solo as I travel into the freezer. I climb through vents and find my way to a crane that I move.
Coming out to a new area there is a new security guard and scientist in the area. We move through the offices and clear out the rooms one by one. I find myself in an elevator shaft but fail to make my first attempted jump.
Since autumn all of the leaves have dropped off these plants. They are bare now, but not dead. Waiting, for warmer weather and then will produce leaves. And maybe if I am lucky I will get flowers, even more lucky if I get fruit this year. The trees are only a few years old, so I think it is unlikely they will fruit this year. But I always have a hope that they will, being the first year they are in the group I just want them to survive.
I have two kinds of apple trees, a Honeycrisp and a Cortland. I really enjoy the flavor of the Honeycrisps, but since I only had the space for two trees I got two different kinds. This is important so they will produce a health fruit set. As if I just have two Honeycrisps it may not produce a fruit with strong genetics.
Not sure if I have ever eaten a Cortland apple, though I am sure it will be tasty. And if not so good raw I can always bake it or use it in some kind of recipe. From what I have read the McIntosh apple is similar to the Cortlands. So maybe ill pick some of those up at the market and see what they taste like.
Links to the two kinds of Apples I am planning on growing.

In the next few months as the temperatures warm up, I should see some signs of growth from the two. But for the moment, they are just sticks. Curious to see how well they grow this year due to them getting more sunlight. We had some sick trees that were cut down, so now the apple trees should be getting many more hours of sunlight.
The trees I bought are semi dwarfs so they will probably stay smaller than a traditional apple tree but thats fine with me, theres not alot of space for them on this property. So a semi dwarf is better suited for this location.
Hoping the flowers bloom around the time my mason bees are out and active. Same for my cherry trees, as both were just planted last year I will need to wait awhile to see when they end up blooming.

Racing trucks on small roads is rough, in this game there are little town roads and I had to pick a truck race with. It was pretty hard to make progress and I found myself trying to replay it multiple times. I eventually gave up to try a different event. I do alot better on the wide open courses not these town events. And when I have to choose to drive a truck makes it even harder to do those small town events. I tried with two different trucks but both were just making me feel to compact on the course. I had that problem with the long beach road course in Forza 7 as well.
I usually finish most of the races I start but this is one of the few where I rage quit and move to a different map as it was driving me nuts.
Enjoying this game is not hard, honestly I like it alot. But a few of the courses are just so small and without a tiny car it makes it frustrating to drive. The AI effortlessly glide though the turns but they are computers so id expect that from them. Not so easy for the human trying to play the game.
With the upcoming event a week or so away there was alot of testing to be done. I joined in on AltspaceVR for one of the pre-events, also known as prepump III as this was third pre-event to make sure everything is working well.
Being my first VR event I was quite curious about it all. I joined in a little too early and was greeted to an empty room. So keep that in mind when joining, do not join before the specified time or you may not be able to see anyone when it starts.
I got on PAL and chatted with @crimsonclad and she said everyone was there so I rejoined and sure enough I could see many people in the event. There were people all around chatting with each other and a few people practicing gestures using their VR headsets. I only had a computer monitor to use so my experience was a little more limited but still alot of fun.
There were some issues with "invisible guests" as I could not see @juliakponsford nor could I see @r0nd0n. Also had some troubles seeing @asgarth when I was chatting with @jarvie, but once I quit out and rejoined I was able to see him. So not sure what happened there, but hoping it will all be straightened out by the time of the event.
I used my snowball microphone, headphones, mouse and keyboard to be a part of the event and was quite cool seeing so many people there I know. I did a little chatting with @definethedollar and @steevc. Also said hi to @themarkymark and @therealwolf that were there.. Loved your cowboy hat Marky. I thanked @roelandp for setting up the event and we chatted for a minute about where we live.
The video is a little under an hour though the event was an hour and a half. Though I had troubles for the first half hour being in an empty room. It was so weird, I could see two people in the room talking to themselves it appeared. Though after reconnecting I could see many more people so I guess they were just talking to another guest I could not see at the time.
There was some interesting floating guests as well, guessing they had VR and set their boundaries while sitting down and then when standing it would make them hover. Also saw a disembodied figure holding a laser pointer, so some funky things were going on my side for sure. I checked to make sure my video card was not maxing out which it was not so not sure why I was getting invisible guests and some weird missing body parts. But all and all I had alot of fun and looking forward to joining the main event coming up in a few weeks.
You can register for the event at hivefe.st and you do not need a VR headset to join just as I did with just a computer monitor, mouse, keyboard, microphone and such.
I put together a short video of me installing a fifteen foot wide welded wire fence. Using eight foot stakes I pound them into the ground using a special tool. Its mostly a pipe with handles on them and welded closed on one side.
Driving in these stakes with this tool was very easy, I have done this with a sledgehammer and its alot harder that way. Once the posts are driven into the ground I go about cutting the welded wire fence to the size I need to complete the covering of an edge of a wall. Theres a drop off below so its important to make sure no one can fall down in that area. Using these materials I can build a basic fence.
Rolling out the wire and moving it around took a little work but I got it all done rather quickly. It took me awhile to figure out how to attach the hooks to the stakes that hold the fence in place. But all and all I got it done in a few hours. I started this in the morning and got it done before the sun started cooking me.. haha
Good to know how to do this, now I can build a simple fence quite easily. This was the first time of me building such a structure. I think if I ever need a Deer proof garden building a double tall or triple tall version of this would be useful.
The main this to worry about is what you are driving these stakes into underground. Got to make sure there are no underground wires or pipes as you are driving them a few feet down into the ground.
This module keeps the screen busy by showing flocks of different objects. You can change between dots, atoms, cameras and sperm. The objects move together as if they were a flock of birds. I think that is where it gets its name. Its pretty simple but still fun to watch.
This video is a little over thirty minutes long.
Screen savers in the 1990s had a purpose, to stop screen burn in. Afterdark is a screen saver application released in 1989 and produced many versions of their screen saver app up through the 2000s. I will be showing off the various modules included in this thirty year old application (Version 4.0) released in 1996. Some may remember the Flying Toasters as a screen saver. Or maybe some other, but as an early Mac user myself these all bring back memories for me.
I run the screensavers on a Windows ME virtual machine, and capture the screen using OBS. Some of the screensavers crash, probably due to emulation of the virtual machine. But others run flawlessly. The computers during the days of these screen savers only had a few hundred megabytes of RAM and few hundred megahertz of processing power. Even with these constraints some amazing screensavers were designed by Berkeley Systems and Sierra.
