Reading Pakeha?: Fiction and Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand
Author: Christina Stachurski File Type: pdf Aotearoa New Zealand, a tiny Pacific country, is of great interest to those engaged in postcolonial and literary studies throughout the world. In all former colonies, myths of national identity are vested with various interests. Shifts in collective Pakeha (or New Zealand-European) identity have been marked by the phenomenal popularity of three novels, each at a time of massive social change. Late-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and the collapse of the idea of a singular nation can be traced through the reception of John Mulgans Man Alone (1939), Keri Hulmes the bone people (1983), and Alan Duffs Once Were Warriors (1990). Yet close analysis of these three novels also reveals marginalization and silencing in claims to singular Pakeha identity and a linear development of settler acculturation. Such a dynamic resonates with that of other settler cultures - the similarities and differences telling in comparison. Specifically, Reading Pakeha? Fiction and Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand explores how concepts of race and ethnicity intersect with those of gender, sex, and sexuality. This book also asks whether Pakeha is still a meaningful term.

Apocalyptic scenarios remain prevalent and powerful in popular culture (in television, film, comic books, and popular fiction), in politics (in debates on climate change, environmentalism, Middle East policy, and military planning), and in various religious traditions. Academic interest in apocalypticism is flourishing indeed, the study of both ancient and contemporary apocalyptic phenomena has long been a focus of attention in scholarly research and a ready way to engage the religious studies classroom. Apocalypses in Context is designed for just such a classroom, bringing together the insights of scholars in various fields and using different methods to discuss the manifestations of apocalyptic enthusiasm in different ages (Part I Ancient Apocalyptic Literature Part II Apocalypticism through the Ages Part III Apocalypticism in the Contemporary World). This approach enables the instructor to make connections and students to recognize continuities and contrasts across history. Apocalypses in Context features illustrations, graphs, study questions, and suggestions for further reading after each chapter, as well as recommended media and artwork to support the college classroom. **

The son of an encomendero, Baltasar Obregon was twenty years old when he joined the 1564 expedition led by the first governor of Nueva Vizcaya, Francisco de Ibarra. The purpose of the expedition was to establish mining settlements in the borderlands of New Spain and to suppress indigenous rebellions in the region. Although Obregons role in the Ibarra expedition was that of soldier-explorer, and despite his lacking an advanced education, he would go on to compose Historia de los descubrimientos de Nueva Espana twenty years later, expanding his narrative to include the years before and after his own firsthand experiences with Ibarra. Obregon depicts the storied landscape of the northern borderlands with vivid imagery, fusing setting and situation, constructing a new reality of what was, is, and should be, and presenting it as truth. In Capturing the Landscape of New Spain, Rebecca A. Carte explains how landscape performs a primary role in Obregons retelling, emerging at times as protagonist and others as antagonist. Carte argues that Obregons textualization offers one of the first renderings of the region through the Occidental cultural lens, offering insight into Spanish cultural perceptions of landscape during a period of important social and political shifts. By examining mapping and landscape discourse, Carte shows how history and geography, past and present, people and land, come together to fashion the landscape of northern New Spain. **Review Rebecca Carte shows us to see how narration and description, history and geography, past and present, people and land, together fashion the landscape of northern New Spain, a collection of places and non-places bound into a meaningful and usable whole. She provides a model that we can use to approach other texts from this vast corpus, texts that cry out of the sort of spatial analysis exemplified here but only too rarely brought to bear upon them.Ricardo Padron, author ofThe Spacious Word Cartography, Literature, and Empire in Early Modern Spain Cartes sensitive reading of the cultural landscape makes a fundamental contribution to our understanding of early Spanish exploration in Mexico.Western Historical Quarterly About the Author Rebecca A. Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our times, yet also seemingly intractable. This book offers novel insights on this contemporary challenge, drawing together the state-of-the-art thinking in anthropology. Approaching climate change as a nexus of nature, culture, science, politics, and belief, the book reveals nuanced ways of understanding the relationships between society and climate, science and the state, certainty and uncertainty, global and local that are manifested in climate change debates. The contributors address three major areas of inquiry how climate change issues have been framed in previous times compared to the present how knowledge about climate change and its impacts is produced and interpreted by different groups and how imagination plays a role in shaping conceptions of climate change.

Every year thousands of pilgrims travel to Brindavan, the village where Krishna is said to have lived as a child. There, they witness a series of religious dramas called ras lilas, whose central roles are performed by children. By translating four plays that collectively span this cycle, John Hawley provides a lively perspective on the mythology of Krishna as Hindus experience it today. Originally published in 1981. A selection of poems by the ancient Chinese poet and statesman Wang Ah-Shih, translated by David Hinton.Wang An-shih (1021-1086 C.E.) was a remarkable figurenot only one of the great Sung Dynasty poets, but also the most influential and controversial statesman of his time. Although Wang had little interest in the grandeur of high office and political power, he took the responsibility of serving the people seriously. He rose to become prime minister, and in this position he instituted a controversial system of radically egalitarian social reforms to improve the lives of Chinas peasants. Once those reforms were securely in place, Wang retired to a reclusive life of artistic and spiritual self-cultivation.It was after his retirement, practicing Chan (Zen) Buddhism and wandering the mountains around his home, that Wang An-shih wrote the poems that made his reputation. Short and plainspoken, these late poems contain profound multitudesthe passing of time, rivers and mountains, silence and Buddhist emptiness. They won him wide acclaim in China and beyond across the centuries. And in Hintons breathtaking translations, Wang feels like a major contemporary poet with deep ecological insight and a questioning spirit.**
