Had big plans for this Vlog with several new landscape photography areas in Glencoe I was keen to visit. Ended being a very productive day with images of the mountains, river and waterfall all within walking distance of the Glencoe Ski Centre.
However filming equipment issues and my limited time were against me and it has been a miracle I could cobble together this latest film. Like many of my latest films I have had issues with the quality and this was another destined to get binned. However thought of trying a slightly different format to allow me to still tell my story of the day.
Let me know if you like the format and if it could be a better way of sharing my trips with you all having a mixture of in studio so to speak and out in the field.
Also had the chance to learn new things in regards to Photoshop when I needed to find a way to have both a long exposure smoothed out river yet keep a tree pin sharp that was blowing in the wind.
As always it was great to get out and take some photographs and was very lucky to come away with some really nice images of the trip.
Please check out link to John Thow's photography website as i am sure you will enjoy looking through his images.
Winter Hillwalking in Scotland | The Drumochter Munros.
Started off from the 'Balsporran Cottages' and was looking to do a little more winter hillwalking and an overnight wildcamp. However the distance I had planned to cover in the snow made for slow progress but glad I still managed to bag two munros out of the day, Geal Charn and A'Mharconaich.
The constant stopping for filming also adds a good few hours to the trip overall. By the time I had come off the second munro I decided to call it quits and head home for the night.
Met a cool collie dog bagging the same munro as myself when I got to the first one of the day, and generally had a great day out in the hills.
Weather was poor at start of the day with a few white-out conditions at times making navigation interesting, but really started to improve after lunch time. Managed to loose one of my crampons on the way off the second munro so will need to get a new set before my next outing. :(
Terrain was fairly easy underfoot apart from the snow and ice in sections. The east side of the A9, south of Dalwhinnie is pretty desolate and can be a bit of a trudge. However the peaks on this western side of the A9 have bags more character and afford good views over Loch Ericht to the Ben Alder group and beyond.

Overnight backpacking trip in the mountains of Scotland.
Decided to have a trip to complete the summit of another mountain top I have been meaning to revisit for a long time. Nice to be out on my own to relax and just enjoy the amazing scenery and views that this area has to offer.

Taking a first look at this second hand Zpacks Solplex ultralight backpacking tent.
This ultralight tent was one of the lightest full featured shelters on the market when released and made from Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF). The tent comes in at an impressive total shelter weight of only (0.44kg) 15.5oz.
In this video I give my initial first look impressions of what I do like, what I think is maybe not such a good design and what I am really not sure about with it at the moment.
This tent become available second hand on the internet and at a great price so I just had to get it to at least try out for a few nights. Still not my favourite fabric colour of choice and just can’t seem to get away from the camo DCF.
My plan was to maybe use this as an even lighter shelter system compared to my old MLD Duomid for tackling the Cape Wrath Trail (CWT) for a second time in the coming months.
Not sure it is the well thought out and executed design many seem to rave about. However like all my other films this is just my own personal opinion and should be taken as such.
Note that much like the 3F UL Lanshan it also requires the use of trekking poles or custom carbon poles from the manufacturer to set it up correctly. And in this case you actually require two poles to erect it and make it stable.

Landscape Photography Scotland, The Blackwater Reservoir & Navvy's Graveyard.
New Year’s Day walk up to the Blackwater Reservoir above Kinlochleven and visit to the Navvy’s Graveyard.
Brought my camera in case there was an opportunity of good landscape photograph.
This is a fairly long walk with some steep sections as you leave Kinlochleven. It is also a small section of the West Highland Way and majority of the route is flat and would be good for some mountain biking.
The reservoir was created behind a dam in the mountains high above Kinlochleven, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. At over 914 m long, the dam is the longest in the Highlands.
The hydroelectric scheme was constructed in the early 1900s for the British Aluminium Company (later: British Alcan) for the purpose of smelting aluminium and was designed by engineers Patrick Meik and Charles Meik. Chief assistant resident engineer was William Halcrow.
The dam, at 27 metres high, was built at an elevation of over 305 metres in rugged and almost inaccessible terrain, and involved the construction of some 6 km of concrete aqueduct and nearly 13 km of steel pipe in total (four parallel pipelines).
The dam was built using hand tools, without the benefit of mechanical earth moving machinery, and has been described as the last major creation of the traditional 'navvy' whose activities in the construction of canals and railways left an indelible mark on the British countryside.
The power house and aluminium smelting plant were situated in Kinlochleven, which is adjacent to the sea loch Loch Leven.
In recent years the smelting works has closed and has mostly been demolished albeit that a few buildings remain and have been given over to other uses, including a climbing wall which - unusually - has a refrigerated face so that people can practice ice climbing.
The power station now produces electricity for the aluminium smelter in Fort William, supplementing the supply from the Lochaber hydroelectric scheme. Any surplus energy is sold to the national grid for public supply. Consequently, the dam, penstocks and other works associated with it remain in use.
A number of workers lost their lives constructing the dam; their graves, which are marked by concrete markers, are close to the dam.

This is a short film from our overnight stay at Barcaldine Castle near Oban in Scotland.
In actual fact it was meant to be a relaxing break for my wife with the possibility of doing some hill walking and a bit of landscape photography.
However the opportunity come up online for an overnight stay at Barcaldine Castle near Oban and having never stayed overnight in a castle before, the chance was just too good to pass up.
The weather was terrible for the walking and photography but let me spend an hour or two trying to share the atmosphere of our stay at this amazing building.
For visitors who are a fan of the Outlander series this place is a bit of a dream come true to stay in such a well restored and kept Scottish castle.
Also the stories of ghosts and strange things going on made the place even more appealing :) Although some of its oldest history can be a bit disturbing.
Again I would like to thank Abbie and Daniel the managers and hosts for such a great time and for the hospitality we were shown during this short overnight stay.

Early summer overnight wild camping trip walking out from the 'Bridge of Orchy' to our camp spot next to 'Loch Dochard'.
This was a long time coming pre-arranged meet up with, Jim - 'Bored Man Outdoors'.
Also the chance to have a couple of beers, chat about all things wild camping and YouTube at one of Scotland's most accessible yet remote locations.
Later joined by, Murray - 'Scotland Mountains' where we shared stories, midge repellent and coated peanuts long into the night.
The morning was amazing with mist across the Loch making this a particularly special wild camp.
Maybe check the videos below of the trip for an alternative perspectives of this overnight trip through links below.

Another scenic backpacking and hiking section of the Cape Wrath Trail with lots of accent and decent during frequent and heavy rain showers.
But for me the trail so far has been the perfect wildcamping adventure. It was amazing to watch the storm clouds pass over the mountains as I hiked the trail.
Due to the condition of my feet and the pain I had to stop hiking earlier than I had planned for this day. It would also give me the chance to get them sorted once and far all before hiking any further.
It was nice to find a fairly flat wildcamping spot for the tent and just relax for the rest of the afternoon with some nice weather and a gentle breeze to keep the midges away.
I also discuss my Innov8 footwear and sock choice along with the Katadyn Befree water filter I have been using during this trip.
I hope you have enjoyed this backpacking trip vlog and I do plan to discuss it more in future videos covering what backpacking gear worked and what didn't.

My first attempt at the Scottish, Cape Wrath Trail.
Often referred to as Britain’s toughest long-distance walk, stretching 240 miles through boggy, challenging terrain yet some of Scotland’s most incredible landscapes.
This first video is just an introduction on my preparation for this long distance backpacking adventure. How I went about trying to improve my fitness prior to the trip and also what trail food I planned on taking for the multiple days ahead. The video shows some of the backpacking food I created for multiple days and also some dehydrated meals I purchased to try out.
The goal of the trip was really to test a lot of my new backpacking gear, myself and to also see how easy or challenging it would be to cover the miles yet still film the trip.
I had actually planned on doing the trip with a fellow YouTuber next year but thought I would do a test run and see how far I could get with the few days holiday I had.
Due to the current situation I decided to start the Cape Wrath Trail from the Lighthouse and work my way south to Fort William in reverse to how it would normally be done. Just because you are going South don’t think it makes the challenge any easier.
Things started well but as you will see in the upcoming future films, things started to unravel quickly due to one significant bad choice.
Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments.
