Ends and Means: An Inquiry Into the Nature of Ideals
Author: Aldous Huxley File Type: pdf Contemporary intellectuals still struggle over the relationship of ends to means, especially in political discourse. Pacifism is still an important topic today, as terrorism and dictatorial states abound. Many will find solace in Ends and Means, while others will find the book only a case study of the relationship of ethics to politics.Aldous Huxley examines common issues in a unique fashion. How can the regression in charity through which we are living, and for which each one of us is in some measure responsible, be halted and reversed? How can existing society be transformed into the ideal society described by the prophets? How can the average sensual man and the exceptional (and more dangerous) ambitious man be transformed into a non-attached being, one who can create a society significantly better than our own?Huxley discusses the relationship between the theories and the practices of reformers and the nature of the universe. He argues that our beliefs about the ultimate nature of reality help us formulate conceptions of right and wrong, not only in our private life, but also in the sphere of politics and economics. Far from being irrelevant, our philosophical beliefs are the final determining factor in our actions. This provocative classic volume, now available in paperback, will continue to stimulate discussion and thought.Review[A] book to be read, re-read and thought about It is this combination of intense intellectual effort, intense preoccupation with ultimate truth, and intense emotional and artistic sincerity, which is the worlds first need today. The SpectatorAldous Huxley focuses attention upon the gravest moral issue of this generation the wide-spread disposition to believe that we can achieve ends which we believe to be good by means which we know quite clearly to be abominable Mr. Huxleys argument is refreshing indeed. His central thesis, the impossibility of promoting peace and charity by means of poison gas and machine guns, will remain to plague those realists and idealists who are so sure they can save the world with slaughter and murder.Otto F. Kraushaar, American Sociological ReviewIndividual political scientists, economists, and sociologists doubtless have written with more assurance on the several aspects of Huxleys social diagnosis and prescription but few are likely to bring a fresher and more masterful approach to the ultimate synthesis.Marshall E. Dimock, The American Political Science ReviewEnds and Means cannot fail to arouse the greatest interest among social science intellectuals.Talcott ParsonsAbout the AuthorAldous Huxley (1894-1963) was an English writer and editor of Oxford Poetry. The attitudes of disgruntled common citizens become clear in these documents. Politically unsophisticated, unimpressed by the liberal-minded intelligentsia, resentful that Soviet goods were being exported while people at home were deprived and hungry, the everyday critics were sometimes caught in acts of sedition. Their crimes were cursing their bosses, desecrating symbols of Soviet power, penning anonymous letters and leaflets, writing naive anti-Soviet treatises, and joining proto-political organizations. This book covers the gamut, from the death of Stalin to elections to individual and group acts of defiance. --Book Jacket.

In The Politics of Southern Pastoral Literature, 17851885 Jeffersonian Afterlives, Peter Templeton presents a wide-ranging and systematic evaluation of pastoral in the nineteenth-century Southern novel, offering an explicit appraisal of the philosophical and political rationale of pastoral literature alongside the existing body of research into the image of Jefferson following his death. Rather than assuming a homogeneous South, Templeton locates Southern pastoral in its specific political context, offering readings of significant factors such as the literary representation of landscape, of class and the yeoman ideal, and the institution of slavery and its intellectual underpinnings. Focusing on a six key Southern authors, both canonical and relatively understudied, the book charts key transformations in the politics of pastoral literature in the period, and noteworthy reconfigurations in the representation of Jefferson and his philosophies, in order to analyze what these signified to nineteenth-century Americans. In doing so, the text also demonstrates how ideologies react to the stresses imposed on them by political realities. **

The articles in this volume investigate changes in texts that became to be regarded as holy and unchangeable in Judaism and Christianity. The volume seeks to draw attention to the empirical evidence from Qumran, the Septuagint as well as from passages in the Hebrew Scriptures that have been shaped by the use of other texts. The contributions are divided into three main sections The first section deals with methodological questions concerning textual changes. The second section consists of concrete examples from the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and Septuagint on how the texts were changed, corrected, edited and interpreted. The contributions of the third section will investigate the general influence and impact of Deuteronomistic ideology and phraseology on later texts.

The term War on Terror (WOT) covers a mass of interlinked topics. Here an outstanding group of authors and academics dissect them from ethical, political, legal, economic and historical perspectives. Drawn from the world-famous Oxford Amnesty Lectures, the essays are substantial contributions to their fields and of abiding relevance. Here it is argued that members of active terrorist groups should be pre-emptively executed that there is no provision for WOT in international law that WOT is not cost-efficient that war and terrorism can no longer be distinguished and that the term terrorist has been captured by a specific political constituency. The arguments of the celebrated contributors, from Ahdaf Soueif to Joanna Bourke, are confirmed or contradicted by their respondents, resulting in broad, scholarly coverage of the issues. The book concludes with a fatwa against terrorism. WOT lies at the heart of current debate about immigration, multiculturalism and foreign policy. It is one of the determining debates in the politics of today. This volume will be of interest to students of politics, law and religion and to anyone concerned with current affairs. It covers the politics of the Middle East and the Iraq War, human rights in Islam and the West and the ethics of intervention. This is a powerful contribution to an urgent debate. **

An impressive new volume. . . . Richs admirers will recognize the complex symbiosis between the activist and the maker of new language, each propelling, describing, provoking the others words.*Publishers Weekly*Look with all my fear Im here with you, trying what it means, to stand fast what it means to move. In these astonishing new poems, Adrienne Rich dares to look and to extend her poetic language as witness to the treasuresthe midnight salvagewe rescue from fear and fragmentation. Richs work has long challenged social plausibilities built on violence and demoralizing power. In Midnight Salvage, she continues her explorations at the end of the century, trying, as she has said, to face the terrible with hope, in language as complex as necessary, as communicative as possiblea poetics which can work as antidote to complacency, self-involvement, and despair. I have wanted to assume a theater of voices rather than the restricted I. To write for both readers I know exist and those I can only imagine, finding their own salvaged beauty as I have found mine. In her vision of warning and her celebration of life, Adrienne Rich is the Blake of American letters.Nadine Gordimer**
