In this video, we go on another tour of the garden plots. During these garden tours, I hope to document how things are progressing as well as concerns and issues that require investigation and possible changes. I hope these tours provide some of my thought processes as we examine the progress and problems detected, and I hope to inspire and share what we are learning throughout the season. In this video, I share my thoughts on transplanting trees with taproots. Recently I received a question about how much of a tap root needed to be saved in order to successfully transplant a locust tree. There is also footage of me transplanting a 5-6 foot black locust tree in this video.

Transplanting blueberry plant, problems with companion spearmint plants, deep mulching and bed preparation.
In this video we review how we selected soil that was created passively by mixing woodchips, compost and topsoil to creative fungal dominated soil for transplanting the blueberry plants. I reviewed the problems that we've had growing small blueberry bushes within our zone 1A kitchen garden. The problems we have experienced include deep snowfall bending and tearing limbs and branches, saturated soil (heavily mulched), and integrating spearmint as a companion plant between the blueberry plants which ultimately shaded out the blueberry plants and competed for nutrients.
So we decided to transplant the blueberry plants into raised beds in an area that experiences higher winds and less snow accumulation. The beds are initially created using the fungal rich soil from the second food forest where we compost and mulch beds with wood chips. The soil is also amended with Pete Moss and covered with leaf mulch created from a heavily-mulched overwintered carrot bed that was created last fall. The heavy leaf mulch protected the carrots throughout the winter and those carrots were harvested the same day. The used leaf mulch was heavily laden with red wigglers, earthworms and had some mycelium from fungi incorporated into the leaf mulch. This leaf mulch was used to encompass the raised bed containing the root balls of the blueberry plants.
Although not shown in this video coffee grounds would be incorporated on top of the leaf mulch and I also plan to inoculate mycelium rich leaf material from the maple forest just before adding the woodchips cover the raised beds. I will also be installing a soaker hose to facilitate watering during the drought times we experience during the summer.
As time permits and the weather cooperate, I will try and post videos of various activities that I'm involved in on the demonstration site. Hopefully this year I will be able to raise the greenhouse that I disassembled a few years ago.
If you have any questions or comments please leave them below and I will get to them as soon as I can. Thanks so much for watching please share and give this a thumbs-up if you think it's of value. Have a fantastic day!

In this video, I respond to a question I was recently asked about what trees I would recommend for someone living in a different climate. I live in zone 5a (Central New York) and the question was about zone 9B in Florida. I don't have specific recommendations however I give recommendations that I suggest determining what's best for anyone with the same question.

Previously we removed the tarps from these beds which are located in the central part of our gardens. Today I remove the weed mats, staples, and weeds. I recommend using galvanized staples for holding the weed mats in place if you use staples for your weed mats. I also show how the wood chips have broken down over the last two seasons and are becoming soil.
