Episode 3 Steel Mace Oklahoma Ariel Cullison
Ariel Cullison aka @steelmaceoklahoma is a steel mace and boxing coach at The Where House Gym in Oklahoma City. Ariel has a philosophy " Everything I do, Everything I coach,train,teach is approached as meditation." Her and her mother Polly opened their gym with the intention of creating a place where everyone is invited to be part of a community.
Besides the steel mace and boxing they also have yoga and weight training and Ariels' father-in-law is a firefighter and they love working with firefighters to help maintain their fitness. Besides this they now offer their gym to NA & AA meetings. We delve into this a bit as we explore how the steel mace is becoming a helpful tool for the members of NA & AA in a way that gives them better focus and clarity.
Another interesting thing about Ariel is that she was diagnosed with autism a little later in life and she will explain how after learning how to live with autism she learned better ways to teach steel mace practice to her clients...

Back in 2020 when the virus was just getting into the USA and we locked down I did a video call with George Wiggins . George is also a Captain with the fire department in Kentucky . Note. I have been doing the Steel Mace Nation podcast for over 3 years now and enjoy it more and more everyday. I ask the listener to look past the simplistic ie, its a "workout podcast" and to delve into the quest that I am on. The quest is for the truth. I find that the steel mace modality challenges the typical meat and potatoes mindset and the dogma behind everything. The steel mace practitioner is part of a small tight knit culture while being extraordinarily counter culture. It adheres to the foundational norms in physical fitness culture while rebels against it . There is a dichotomy that is fun and playful while at the same time it can create great introspection and change your life.

The Top Switch is a technique to move the mace from one hand to the other. Here I demonstrate it by also making and exercise with it.
Notice I start in tight to the mace head then ladder my grip out further and further from the mace head.
Once it gets to my max length I climb back down the ladder getting closer and closer to the mace head.
Great as a warm up or cool down. Excellent for grip strength. Really works well in conjuction with other low impact steel mace exercises for when you want to scale back your workout.
The demand of being on shift requires you to be primed and ready in case you have to go to work quickly. This exerciee prepares the joints and fires up those stabilizer muscles around the joints to protect them. Not a heavy exercise that will tire you out.
