No, answer the authors, convinced on the other hand that a “great dogma” inspired magistrates and investigators. Blinded by fear of what they might discover, they would have eliminated anything that would support the thesis of a network of pedophile-assassins and the role played in it by Michel Nihoul. Convicted of fraud, this sticky businessman was released without any facts linked to the Dutroux affair being held against him. The “X” are the anonymous witnesses who appeared in the investigation from the summer of 1997. Compounded by certain journalists, their statements almost transformed Belgium into a witches' cauldron. However, their inconsistency was such that at the beginning of 1998, eleven magistrates solemnly declared that these “X files” were nothing but wind. Revisiting the hearing minutes in turn, the authors implicate magistrates and investigators: in their eyes, certain cross-checks give rise to serious suspicions about Michel Nihoul. In doing so, they say they only want to serve transparency, deny themselves playing investigating judges and even plead candor. The Zembla episodes of March 11 and 18, 2004 ('The X-Dossiers') focus on the story of the so-called witness X-1. This witness, a young woman from Ghent, caused commotion in Belgium in 1997 with her statement about networks that allegedly abused and murdered children. Marc Dutroux's lawyer has asked for X-1 to testify during the trial in Arlon. Zembla investigated - based on the police file - what exactly X-1 stated and what the truthfulness of those statements was. In the first broadcast about X-1 (on Thursday, March 11), it appears that the Belgian gendarmerie was able to confirm much of what it said. Based on her statements, two investigations into murdered girls (Christine van Hees and Carine Dellaert) have been reopened. X-1 had 'perpetrator knowledge' in both the case of Christine van Hees and that of Carine Dellaert. Opposition X-1 said that she was abused from her childhood until well into adulthood by a number of prominent Belgians and also by Marc Dutroux and Michel Nihoul. In Zembla she speaks extensively about those memories and about the interrogations by the gendarmerie. Zembla shows how the Belgian justice system, through X-1, had concrete leads to solve the murder cases. But those tracks have not been followed. Furthermore, it appears that there are clear indications of the involvement of Marc Dutroux and Michel Nihoul. The researchers at the time tell Zembla how their research went and how they received increasing internal opposition from higher up. A controversy arose in the media about X-1. Most media depicted her as a deranged fantasist, just like the Belgian justice system, which closed the X-file after a few months of investigation. But no one actually knew exactly what X-1 had stated and what the justice department had done in terms of investigation. The audience therefore became divided into 'believers' and 'non-believers'. Part 2 of 'The Part 2 also focuses on the connections between the X-Dossiers and the Netherlands. Some facts in a third murder case, that of Katrien de Cuyper, can be linked to the Zandvoort child pornography case.
