The stop was initiated by Officer Christopher Brown, Brown was in an unmarked patrol car. According to the Richmond County Coroner's Office, Jones was pronounced dead at Augusta University Medical Center on Monday after experiencing a medical emergency while being transported to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation looked into the incident. Jones had been a passenger in a black SUV that was pulled over by deputies at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Clifton Street on Monday evening. During the traffic stop, Jones stood up and was immediately tased by Richard Russell, cowboy stye. On October 16th, when the incident occurred, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested to look into a use of force incident that occurred in Richmond County. The incident began as a traffic stop involving three men in a vehicle. Jermaine Jones, Jr., a 24-year-old man from Augusta, fled from the officers and was tased by one of them. Multiple officers were then able to detain Jones, but a struggle ensued as they attempted to do so. Jones was transported to a local hospital after experiencing symptoms requiring medical treatment during the journey to the Richmond County Jail. He remains in critical condition. Jones has been charged by the Richmond County Sheriff's Office with possession of a firearm by a first offender (a felony) and obstruction of a law enforcement officer (a misdemeanor). 12.21.21 “The District Attorney’s Office is in possession of the initial investigative report into the death of Jermaine Jones, Jr., which was conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The investigative file contains extensive documentation, evidence, and reports to be reviewed before any determinations can be made. This process takes time, as investigative reviews often require consultation with medical experts, in-depth review of the applicable law, and necessary additional investigation. Officer Richard Russell resigned from the Richmond County Sheriffs office as an investigator in Feb 2022 and now is a deputy for the Warrenton county police department in the state if Georgia The body cam of the Jermaine Jones death is being withheld pending the outcome an investigation.
