2016 Lecture 10 Maps of Meaning: Gautama Buddha, Adam and Eve
The story of the Buddha shares much of its structure with the creation myth featuring Adam and Eve in the Book of Genesis. The commonalities include the idea of a paradisal, enclosed space; the disruption of that space by anomalies associated with mortality; and, in the final analysis, the idea of enlightenment or identification with the divine as medication for tragic self-consciousness.

The Coddling of the American Mind on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2QJ20MQ
Consider this book as a gift for your local school board member, teacher or principal. The more educational professionals become aware of the issues it presents, and the dangers of our current hyper-protective preoccupations, the better the chances we'll change course.
I spoke with Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt September 18, 2018 about their new book, The Coddling of the American Mind -- a treatise on the counterproductive but increasingly predominant "safety culture" of trigger warnings, safe spaces and microaggression sensitivity.
We discussed the psychological and sociological factors that underlie this philosophy of fragility, over-protection and offense, considering the contribution of older parents, fewer siblings, the strange interaction of postmodern philosophy and Marxism on campuses, and the widespread use of social media by young people.
We focused on the increasing proclivity of those teaching in the social sciences and humanities to characterize Western culture as patriarchal and oppressive; producing, as a secondary consequence, a pervasive and all-encompassing victim/victimizer narrative (and producing that partly for the purposes of justifying that characterization).

Dr Jordan B Peterson and Dr. Steven Koonin discuss the IPCC reports – the globally sourced research on climate change – and how policymakers take summaries of summaries from these to justify their green agenda, despite what the reports actually suggest. They also discuss starvation, obesity, green economics, and nuclear futures.
Dr. Steven Koonin, a University Professor at NYU, has served as the Department of Energy’s Under Secretary for Science, as Chief Scientist for BP, and as professor and Provost at Caltech. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a Governor of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a senior fellow of Stanford’s Hoover Institution, and a Trustee of the Institute for Defense Analyses. Koonin holds a BS in physics from Caltech and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from MIT. He wrote the recent bestseller “Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters.”

I’m making this video to say hi to my viewers and listeners in China, and also to wish them Happy New Year. I was prompted to do so by Ms. Mengjie Ma, a Chinese student studying in Germany, who has worked diligently to translate and subtitle a number of my videos. I have placed links to these in the description of the video.
Mengjie has organized a number of people to work on the translations. They have a group on Weibo: http://bit.ly/2ExqaHn
Thanks, Mengjie. Much appreciated.
I would also like to announce that my new book, 12 Rules for Life, will be translated into Chinese by Beijing Cheers Books (http://bit.ly/2Gn2K49). I don’t know the publication date yet, but will let everyone know as soon as I do know. Links to the publisher are also in the description.
I am very pleased to hear that my lectures are finding an audience in China.

Conscientiousness is the best predictor of long-term life success across multiple domains (including academic and managerial/administrative performance). It breaks down into two aspects: industriousness and orderliness. Industrious people are hard-working, attentive and focused. Orderly people like things where they belong, and are concerned with preserving the integrity of the borders between things. We don't know much about the psychological basis of industriousness. Orderliness, however, appears to be associated with disgust sensitivity, with the "behavioral immune system," and is in all probability elevated in geographical locales where infectious disease is prevalent. It is also a good predictor of political conservatism. When disgust sensitivity gets out of hand, too much cleansing (ethnic and otherwise) becomes increasingly possible.

Our experience takes narrative form, under the influence of biological, cultural and uniquely individual forces. This is partly because our minds are based in social cognition. Experience manifests itself comprehensibly as the unknown itself, the great dragon of chaos; the unknown as we experience it, the great mother; culture, the great father, and the individual, the center of conscious being, Each of these categories manifests itself in action. Each has a positive and negative element.
