Ubuntu MATE is a perfect distro for new users trying Linux for the first time, the team have done a brilliant job making the distro easy to use and easy to choose from a selection of desktop styles, such as: Gnome Classic, Apple Mac OSX, Unity, and a new Pantheon style. Ubuntu MATE 17.04 uses the lightweight MATE v1.18 desktop based on GTK3+.

Kwheezy is a KDE distro ideal for Intermediate Users. Its based on Debian 7 Stable (Wheezy) and provides a well configured desktop environment, with some of their own custom utilities, but comes with a very large number of apps pre-installed (iso file is 4GB).
Their selection of custom utilities allows an Intermediate User to experiment with configuring the KDE desktop.
One useful utility is Kwheezy Profiler which allows you to take multiple snapshots of the desktop in order to restore back to.

Progressing further into Orwellian society, the UK Conservative Government is pushing through a Bill to allow the British Board Film Classifications (BBFC) to force ISP’s to block any pornographic sites which fail to carry out age verification.
Blocking won’t just be confined to British sites, but to all adult websites Worldwide.

Game play of Quake 1 using DarkPlaces Engine in Ubuntu 11.10
DarkPlaces Engine uses OpenGL and adds some nice new modern effects to the classic 1996 game, including new lighting effects, shadows, particle effects, and anti-aliasing.
Screencast of Gameplay showing levels E3M6 Chambers of Torment, and E4M2 Tower of Despair in Nightmare difficulty. Recording was done in HD 1080P using gtk-recordmydesktop
DarkPlaces Website: http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/
Install Instructions:
1. Download the Darkplaces Engine from the above website
2. Unzip Darkplaces into your Home folder
3. Create a new subfolder called "id1"
4. Copy the original Quake .pak files into the id1 folder
(I got mine by Installing Quake CD into DOSBox then copied the .pak files to Darkplaces)
5. Make sure all file names are in lowercase
6. Run the appropriate executable for your system:
Windows: darkplaces.exe
Linux: darkplaces-linux-686-glx or darkplaces-linux-x86_64-glx
Optional if you have the original CD:
1. Rip all the CD Audio into .ogg files
2. Create a new subfolder in id1 called "sound"
3. Create a new subfolder in sound called "cdtracks"
4. Copy the Ogg CD tracks to ~/darkplaces/id1/sound/cdtracks
Tracks have to be named: track001.ogg, track002.ogg, etc...
Once I had got everything up and running I moved the whole darkplaces folder across to /usr/local/games

Our thoughts so far with the experiment discussing Manjaro ARM KDE and Raspberry Pi OS Pixel.
Both have been a let down in terms of performance for Manjaro and Audio configuration for Raspberry Pi OS.
Miss Quids is trying Ubuntu MATE 20.04 next, which we have tried briefly, and been impressed with performance. Its the first OS that has made the Raspbery Pi 4 feel like a desktop replacement.

Using a lightweight device, like a Raspberry Pi, you could stay connected to an IRC session 24/7 and connect into it from multiple clients, or even from one more power hungry system.
I'm using Raspbian on the RPi and Kubuntu 14.04 on my Main system. This tutorial applies to any Debian or Ubuntu based system.
Instructions for setting up Quassel Core:
sudo apt-get install quassel-core
Instructions for setting up the Clients:
If you are using a KDE Desktop you'll need to remove Quassel - sudo apt-get remove quassel
sudo apt-get install quassel-client
Setup a Username and Password using the Quassel Client
