Have you ever loved an artist so much that you saved a treasured memento of theirs like a guitar pick, a set-list from a concert, or an autographed poster for years and years and years? Well, Kurt Cobain did, and he brought his treasured memento to the studio one day to share with In Utero producer Steve Albini.
As Steve explains:
"When my band Big Black did a farewell tour years before the In Utero sessions, the final show was in some industrial space in Seattle... It was in a weird building with a makeshift stage. It was a cool gig and at end we smashed up all of our gear. I distinctively recall some kid asking me if he could take a piece of my guitar off the stage and me saying ‘go ahead its garbage now.’
“Many years later when we were working on In Utero at the studio in Minnesota, Kurt showed me this little piece of this guitar that he had saved. He had brought it with him after all those years. He had been that kid.”

The Evil Dead
The music video for "Everlong" is a parody of cult classic film The Evil Dead.
The video, which includes an extended version of the song, stars Grohl and Hawkins as Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen at a costume party and was nominated for Best Rock Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards.

Why NO GUITAR SOLOS on Metallica's St Anger
No Solos on St Anger Album
Kirk Hammett No Solos
Frontman James Hetfield admits that the songwriting on St Anger suffered a hit with the departure of bassist Jason Newsted. The album would be the only Metallica studio release to feature the band as a three-piece. As a result, the band decided that they wanted to record something a bit more raw and stripped down, even going so far as to avoid including guitar solos. Not a single one can be found anywhere on the album.
As guitarist Kirk Hammett explains:
"The reason for that is because again we wanted to move together all four of us in the same musical direction... When we tried to put overdubs on the album and put guitar solos on the album... it sounded like an afterthought, you know? Like something was put on after we created it. It stood out. We wanted to preserve the sound of all four of us in a room just jamming. Spontaneously together. To put production stuff on top of that just didn't sound right." - Hammett, Metallica's Hammet Explains Why There Are No..., Blabbermouth (Jun 9, 2003)
Some guitarists might frown at the idea of their soloing skills not being showcased on an album, particularly a heavy metal album. However, Kirk didn't mind.
When asked if he was happy with the way the album came out, he told an interviewer;
"Oh yeah, absolutely. I'm so proud of this album. It freaks me out. I haven't been this proud of an album since 'The Black Album', I must say. I mean, the 'Load' and 'Reload' era for us was such a reaction to our first five albums. We didn't want to do what we had been doing: play fast, over the top and aggressive. If anything, the 'Load' and 'Reload' era was a big experiment in hard rock. We needed to do these two albums for us to make 'St. Anger'. If we would have made 'St. Anger' in the mid-nineties, it wouldn't have been fresh and as exciting for us as it was now. It would have felt like doing the same old thing. We needed to balance it out. When we finally got around playing fast and aggressive again, it sounded fresh. You need to get to point A to be able to make point B sound better, you know?" - Hammett, Metallica's Hammet Explains Why There Are No..., Blabbermouth (Jun 9, 2003)

Rick Rubin HELPS Slipknot Guitarist Jim Root
Although singer Corey Taylor had a negative experience working with producer Rick Rubin on The Subliminal Verses, guitarist Jim Root had a much different experience. As he explains:
"As dark as that [time was for me], it was really amazing how attentive Rick Rubin was to us as a band. He knew I was going through a hard time. I never told him, but I got a knock on my bedroom door, and his assistant came up and he had this herbal calming drop that you put on your tongue to mellow out. A lot of the guys in the band say Rick was unavailable. And, yeah, he takes on a lot of projects at one time, but he also does things that are beneficial. He was listening and having us retrack things that needed work. He's kind of like Big Brother up on the hill. Even though he wasn't there physically every day, he was. And that's my favorite record we've done. We tried some things that were different and took some chances and they came out great. I was hoping we'd be able to evolve from that. I'm not sure that we have." - Root, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)

How Slipknot Sid Wilson Battles Depression
Slipknot's Vol 3 (The Subliminal Verses) didn't start out with a very productive recording process, and almost didn't happen because the band was too busy drinking and was not getting any work done, as various members of the band recount their own stories:
(Drummer) JOEY JORDISON told Revolver Magazine in 2008:
"Me and Paul demoed a bunch of songs. I flew down to Los Angeles and arrived expecting to practice. I walk in and Corey says, "No, I'm going to the Rainbow [Bar & Grill, the famous L.A. rock-and-roll hangout]." And Shawn says, "No, I'm working on something else." I'm like, "What the f***?! We're not f****** jamming?" So I go get a bottle of Jack Daniel's and drink myself into oblivion. Then I wake up at 3 o'clock the next day and say, "Right, let's jam," and no one wants to. It took us three f****** months before everyone came together." - Jordinson, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
Vocalist COREY TAYLOR would say:
"For the most part, I pushed everybody away. I would drink all day and then go to the bar at night. I was the quintessential lead singer. You were gonna cater to my ego and tell me everything was great. And that's so not who I am. Honestly. I never wanted to be like that. I would keep a bottle of Jack next to my f****** bed every day. Instead of figuring out why I was upset, I just drowned in it... I just wanted to feel something other than terrible." - Taylor, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
And turntablist SID WILSON would explain:
"Like some of the other guys, I went through some relationship problems and started drinking and smoking reefer really heavily, nonstop all day to deal with the depression. I'd stay up for three days straight. Then I'd pass out for a day and continue the cycle until I realized a year later that there's a lot worse things than being on the pity pot. I started playing piano and that was a good release for me—getting rid of the depression through the keys." - Wilson, Slipknot Look Back on Torment and Tumult... text Jon Wiederhorn, Revolver (Sep 26, 2008)
