On Route 3, go into the dark grass where a Hidden Grotto can be found. Enter this Hidden Grotto and you’ll sometimes encounter a special Manectric. It ranges between Levels 55-60. It also has the hidden ability, Minus. If any other Pokémon on the field during double or triple battles have the ability Plus or Minus, the user’s Special Attack stat increases.

After getting the first 4 gym badges, return to Petalburg City and enter the gym. Pick any room and you’ll trigger different types of rooms where trainers use certain items in battles. Make your way through at least one side and you’ll enter the room where the gym leader awaits. Norman uses Normal type Pokémon. The first Slaking is replaced by Linoone and Spinda. Spinda will use Teeter Dance to confuse everyone else except for the user. Vigoroth will use Slash for critical hits and Faint Attack for never-miss strikes. Linoone will use Belly Drum to maximize Attack at the expense of 50% of its maximum HP while using Headbutt to make targets flinch. Slaking will use Yawn to make opponents sleep the next turn and Counter to draw back physical attacks for twice the damage. After winning, you’ll receive the Balance Badge and a TM42 (Facade). Facade will inflict double damage if the user has status problems.

Opening a chest that contains the Sage's Staff will trigger an ambush consisting of Warlocks and Karys. A Kary will counter your physical attacks with its own and embrace one of your fighters to petrify it entirely, but also restore its health. The Warlocks will cast fire spells when they raise their staffs. After the battle, continue to make your way through the ravine.

At Cianwood City, go to a spot north of the city and Suicune will be there. If you try to approach, Suicune will take off, and Eusine will stop by to have a battle with you. Drowzee will use Hypnosis to put the target to sleep and Dream Eater to drain the HP of the sleeping target. Haunter will use Mean Look to prevent the target from escaping and Lick for a 30% chance of paralyzing the target. Electrode will use Thunder for a 30% chance of paralyzing the target and Rollout that repeats for 5 turns with each hit growing more powerful every turn. After the battle, head for the gym.

Enter the building and go up the pipes. Study carefully on which pipe you’re taking so you can ascend the area. Watch for Koopas as you scale the room. After bouncing off music note blocks, you’ll find one last area with Paratroopas before using the pipe to return to the surface so you can find the goal.
