Mountain & Landscape Photography | Exploring 'Glen Lyon' For Sunrise.
Early morning landscape photography trip to 'Glen Lyon' in Scotland hoping for an epic sunrise shot.
This location had been on my radar since my winter camp in February as I am keen to capture a good sunrise shot. For once it looked like the weather forecast was going to be correct but one small bank of cloud decided to spoil my party.
Even though things didn't go as planned it was made up for by the peace, tranquility and stunning views. It was nice to just get away for a few hours with the camera to capture some images as well as testing out future potential compositions. Well at least until the 'midges' decided to make an appearance.
Below is the link to my Flickr photography page so I hope you can join me on my photography journey. As always thanks for watching and if you enjoyed my film please help my channel and remember to subscribe. Atb Ray
Starting to put together my ultralight backpacking gear for this years wild camping trips.
In this video I take a look at the Cuben Fiber version of the Mountain Laurel Designs (MLD) DuoMid ultralight shelter that I plan to try as my main ultralight 4-Season backpacking and wild camping tent.
The cost of the Cuben DCF Duomid version, import costs, etc had originally put me off buying one to be honest ... However, a couple of months ago I had the opportunity to purchase one second hand at a bargain price so had to give it a go.
This is the first time it has been pitched to let me get an idea how it pitches as well as the internal size. It is really just a quick overview and first impressions; however, it has many features that I like such as the internal space that it offers. It does have similarities to my old WickiUp 3 tent that I used to own a few years ago but without the large footprint size when looking for suitable ground to pitch on.
The tent has been proven as both a winter and mountain tent and as such look forward to trying it out over the coming year especially in the Scottish winter environment.
For an example of the tents wind shedding capabilities please check out Daron Linney’s amazing video at the link below where his tent was really tested in a 50 mph mountain storm.

Another scenic backpacking and hiking section of the Cape Wrath Trail with lots of accent and decent during frequent and heavy rain showers.
But for me the trail so far has been the perfect wildcamping adventure. It was amazing to watch the storm clouds pass over the mountains as I hiked the trail.
Due to the condition of my feet and the pain I had to stop hiking earlier than I had planned for this day. It would also give me the chance to get them sorted once and far all before hiking any further.
It was nice to find a fairly flat wildcamping spot for the tent and just relax for the rest of the afternoon with some nice weather and a gentle breeze to keep the midges away.
I also discuss my Innov8 footwear and sock choice along with the Katadyn Befree water filter I have been using during this trip.
I hope you have enjoyed this backpacking trip vlog and I do plan to discuss it more in future videos covering what backpacking gear worked and what didn't.

Backpacking and wild camping trip for some landscape photography in Glencoe, Scotland.
The scenery all the way in from Rannoch Moor was stunning after some significant snowfall in the days before. With good weather forecast and the only day I could get off I thought this would make for an excellent trip. It was extremely cold and was also a good test for my WickiUp 3 tent in such cold weather on the Scottish mountains.
Filming in such conditions and low light really put both my GoPro and Panasonic FZ330 to the test but turned out far better than I expected but still not happy with some of the footage. Did have some editing issues at the beginning due to some corrupt footage hence the weird comment in the start narration.
The trip was an amazing experience for the views and it is a great location and area for photography. Although significant cloud did spoil the shots I had been expecting to try and achieve it was still a fantastic short break and great to get out and play in the snow.
Hiking and camping in those kinds of conditions is not for the faint hearted or inexperienced wild camper in my opinion even on a fairly easy mountain such as Beinn a' Chrulaiste.
Whilst there I filmed events as the unfolded of a missing husky that would then become an unexpected integral part of my film story.
Always trying new things and practice the techniques of outdoor filmmaking and a total novice in the art of landscape photography. Using the medium of digital to capture my experiences visiting and exploring Scotland and the great Scottish mountains.

Overnight wild camp in Glencoe, September 2015.
This was one of my first ever wild camps out in the Scottish mountains after a good few years abscence from hillwalking.
Decided to get back out in to the great outdoors and what better way to kick start myself than a summit camp in stunning Glencoe.
This is also my first video or vlog of a trip for YouTube and could not ask for better weather to try it all.

Backpacking & Wild Camping | Failed Camp Visiting 'Meall Mor'.
Decided to try a new location for a spot of hillwalking and bit of summit wild camping if the weather was not too bad.
However once at the top of this hill the views of ‘Meall Mor’ are amazing with views to the ‘Aonnach Eagach’ ridge, ‘Bidean – nam Bian’, ‘Am Bodach’ and other peaks in the area. Did keep calling the ‘Meall Mor’ a Corbett, but is actually classed as one of the ‘Grahams’.
Was planning on spending the evening up on top of ‘Meall Mor’ but as normal for my trips recently, struggled to find a suitable area. Lots of bog, rock and tussocks everywhere would have made camping for the evening a bit uncomfortable. Searched a round for a while but as it was getting late decided to just head down into Glencoe and pitch up behind the Kingshouse Hotel.
Not true wild camping as such so the purist will be turning in there Vangos at the thought. ;)
This is a common area for people travelling the West Highland Way or visiting the ski centre across the road to spend the night. It is a great place to stop especially with the warm climbers bar serving good food and the chance of a refreshing pint of lager, beer or something a little bit stronger.
As mentioned in the film my wife, Mrs Renegade was not too happy. We often come up to this spot for an overnight camp just to get a night away and enjoy the scenery, if only for one night. Sunsets are spectacular especially if the weather is good and the craic at the bar is often good with the chance to meet and speak with people visiting from all over the world.
The local deer population also enjoy the hotel as they come down most mornings and evenings as they often get fed scraps from the kitchen. As such they are fairly relaxed with people about and you can get really close to them for filming and taking pictures.
Suppose for the meat lovers out there you can see the quality of the meat before you buy. As one of the best meals available on the menu are the venison burgers.
Tent performed great with heavy rain and gusty winds picking up during the night and fairly wild in the morning. Not much to see once I was packed away due to the weather as the GoPro lens just blurs out with the raindrops covering the waterproof case.
All in all a great walk with stunning views. Great evening spent in good company and a few drinks.
Outings like this don’t get much better. Atb Ray

Backpacking & Wildcamping | Derry Cairngorm.
Another backpacking and wild camping trip to Derry Cairngorm in the Cairngorms national park.
Short and quick film of my return visit to climb the Munro 'Derry Cairngorm'. Was rushing about after work and weather not the best so didn't have time to do much filming.
Did get some good views across to Ben MacDui and surrounding mountain tops in between the cloud and weather.
Once I had done the hill walk up to the Munro summit I was absolutely knackered and just ready to hit the sack for the night.
This most likely shows in the film as to be honest I did not really feel up to filming.
Was also trying out some new things and also the settings with my editing software and to be honest not to happy with the result.
Little bit of Scottish history sneaked into the film based on start and end if you look carefully.

Despite their modest height, walking and climbing in the Scottish mountains may be made treacherous by their latitude and exposure to Atlantic weather systems. Even in summer, conditions can be atrocious; thick fog, strong winds, driving rain and freezing summit temperatures are commonplace. The content shown in my films are just my own opinions, thoughts and as a way to record my trips. Walking and hiking in the Scottish mountains & hills can be dangerous and is done entirely at your own risk.
Hazards you may encounter include:
Open moorland Terrain, few distinct landmarks, difficult navigation.
Crags and steep drops near summits.
Boggy areas.
River/Stream levels can increase markedly in one day.
Snow and ice on summits even in early summer.
Sudden changes in weather conditions.
Temperature decreases by 1 degree C for every 100m of ascent.
Note:
You are responsible for your own safety.
Are you fit enough to complete your chosen walk in the available time?
Ensure you have the correct clothing for the changeable Scottish weather.
Know where you are going on the walk and follow the route on your map.
At the very least carry a map & compass, survival bag, torch, whistle and small first aid kit.
Ensure you have enough food plus emergency rations.
Cold temperatures will reduce the life of your batteries.
In severe winter conditions you must carry an ice axe. You are also recommended to carry crampons.
Learn and know how to use your equipment.

Backpacking & Wild Camping - Ultralight Camping vs Heavyweight.
Summer Solstice wild camping trip where I meet up with fellow YouTuber, ‘Walk With Wallace’ for a summit camp on West Lomond to take in the sunset.
I was keen to see what ultralight camping & backpacking gear he uses and actually thought he would bring his MLD Trailstar.
However he had a new tent with him the ‘SMD Lunar Solo’ a single person lightweight setup and was trying it for the first time.
He has his base kit level way below mine and something I need to maybe look at improving on for some of my planned long distance hikes later this year and next.
It was also nice to meet up with another fellow YouTuber, Scotland’s Mountains, who gave us our early morning wake up call.
Great to meet him again and catch up on things as well as getting to meet his new addition to the family.

I have really enjoyed using this Lux Hiking Gear Sil Hexpeak V4a Tipi tent on my latest trip.
It is available in Forest Green or Desert Brown colour and there is even a four-season version with a snow skirt. The construction is good and well stitched using a stronger fabric than some of the more well known ultralight tents available and instead is made using (40D/230T Nylon Ripstop) with an overall weight of 1.2kg.
This typical pyramid / tipi single pole shelter design is very easy to erect, especially in poor weather. Teepee tents in general are historically reliable camping shelters and famous for there versatility and ease of erestion. Simply stake out the four corners, slide underneath, place the pole in the centre and add some tension.
Once all your gear is in and under cover, all the other pegging points and guy lines can all be sorted out and tensioned if required.
It also has a generous floor space which is great for comfort and stowing gear but can also be a drawback as a much larger area is required for pitching it, which may rule out some potential spots where space is tight or ground is very uneven.
Inside there is a generous porch with room for gear and cooking if the weather is bad. The shelter can also be used on its own without the inner to create a generous space and also save weight, but most will opt for the single person inner. This adds a little extra warmth on cold nights, helps to prevent draughts and also keeps those pesky biting insects at bay.
There are a number of extra options for inside including a two-person inner and a selection of bathtub footprints for use as a single skin setup where the ground is wet.
I am 5' 10" and there is enough room for me to lie down on a generous sleeping pad without my face touching the inner tent. However, if you're over 6' in height then the slightly compact inner may be an issue.
The beauty of this type of tent design is that it makes use of trekking poles but a rather robust dedicated pole can be purchased for an additional cost if required.
