In this video, I discuss Bitcoin's speed, average block time, and final settlement assurances-- compared to traditional payment processors like Visa as well as "faster" blockchains like Litecoin (LTC).
Satoshi chose a 10-minute average block time for a number of reasons:
1) To allow plenty of time for new blocks to propagate from node to node across the network globally (especially in a situation where there are many more nodes than there were in Satoshi's day or today);
2) To allow plenty of time for these nodes to check that each new block is following the consensus rules;
3) To minimize the number of chain reorgs and temporary forks.
You can make faster blocks, but that will not provide greater final settlement assurances. Security and finality is provided by the amount of energy/time/work that an attacker would need to expend to rewrite the blockchain from your transaction block up to the present.
Litecoin has faster average block times, but much slower final settlement times. Visa is even worse.
Bitcoin focuses on a decentralized, secure base layer-- which allows for higher layers like the Lightning Network to handle faster, cheaper transactions that don't demand the same level of final settlement assurances.
Satoshi made the average block time 10 minutes. This suggests that he was NOT designing the system to be used for small, fast payments like buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
The Bitcoin base layer will eventually be used exclusively for settling large important transactions in the billions of dollars. It is a final settlement layer that is unparalleled.

In this video, I discuss how the best-performing stocks of the previous decade rarely outperform over the next 10 years.
At the beginning of the 1980's, investors favored oil stocks and other U.S. stocks. Commodity stocks ended up underperforming, while Japanese stocks did really well.
At the beginning of the 1990's, investors favored Japanese stocks. They were underweight U.S. stocks and tech stocks in particular, which ended up being the best performers of the decade.
At the beginning of the 2000's, investors were massively overweight U.S. TMT stocks, which ended up having a lost decade. Instead, commodity and emerging market stocks did really well.
At the beginning of the 2010's, investors were overweight commodity stocks and Chinese stocks, both of which had a lost decade. They were underweight FAANG stocks, which ended up driving most of the performance of the decade.
As we begin the 2020's, investors are overweight index funds and FAANG stocks. This suggests that both will underperform in the coming decade. There is also a good change that emerging markets outperform the U.S.
For the 2020's, I am most excited about gold and gold stocks, Bitcoin, biotech, and virtual reality.

In this video, I discuss replacement cycling attacks on the Lightning Network, as theorized in Antoine Riard's latest paper.
Is the Lightning Network about to get destroyed? Unlikely. There's a huge bug bounty if you can hack the Lightning Network and no one has claimed it yet, even though Riard has published that paper showing how it can be done.
Riard did the right thing here: Bitcoiners should be focused on potential network and protocol vulnerabilities.
We need Bitcoin and the Lightning Network to work well when we need it most-- and especially in an environment where it is being attacked by nation-state attackers.
It's still too early to tell whether this is a critical vulnerability that cannot be fixed. This is a highly technical area that is probably only understood by a few hundred people worldwide.
For now, the bulk of your BTC should always be in cold storage (hardware wallet or multisig) secured on the base layer.
