Episode #1: Years Five years after being taken by the CRM, Rick Grimes has tried unsuccessfully four times to escape, including sending a message in a bottle to Michonne along with his belongings on one occasion and chopping his own hand off on another. Rick is assigned as a consignee, someone who spends six years doing work on the outskirts of Philadelphia - now the Civic Republic - before being allowed into the city. Rick dreams of a regular life with Michonne and eventually accepts an offer from Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor to join the CRM. Okafor reveals that he had helped the CRM, then the Pennsylvania National Guard, save the city from being napalmed at the cost of his own wife and he attempts to recruit Rick and Pearl Thorne into his plan to change the CRM from the inside. After another failed escape attempt and the destruction of Omaha, Rick finally accepts his new life and a position as the commander of a CRM forward operating base. Recalling a story from his childhood, Rick agrees to join Okafor's plan, just before their helicopter is shot down, killing Okafor and his men. The attacker proves to be Michonne who is reunited with Rick for the first time in years. In Moscow, Talos pursues Everett K. Ross for killing CIA agent Prescod, who theorized Skrull rebels are plotting to incite war between Russia and the United States. Maria Hill arrives to assist Ross, but discovers he is a Skrull and calls Nick Fury, who has been working in space after the Blip.[a] Returning to Earth to meet with Talos, Fury learns Talos has been exiled from the Skrull Council and former ally Gravik has taken a leadership position with the rebels. Fury is kidnapped by MI6 agents and taken to meet his old acquaintance, Sonya Falsworth. He proposes an alliance to stop Gravik, but she refuses. Using a bug to eavesdrop on her and the Prime Minister, Fury and Talos locate another rebel, Vasily Poprishchin, but Fury kills Poprishchin after failing to interrogate him. Talos reunites with his daughter G'iah, who acquired dirty bombs for the rebels. After he claims Gravik killed her mother Soren, G'iah reveals the rebels plan to attack Vossoyedineniye Square on Unity Day and marks the bombs' locations. However, Fury, Hill, and Talos discover the locations are decoys before Gravik detonates the bombs. In the ensuing chaos, Hill is shot by Gravik disguised as Fury. Fury and Talos are forced to flee and abandon her.
