Every year, around Mt Fuji, shrines celebrate the beginning of the Mt Fuji climbing route season. Mt. Fuji is both a majestic natural landmark and also a sacred site for Shintoism since at least the 7th century.
Taking place at Murayamasengen Shrine, Yamabushi Japanese Buddhist monks gather to bless this year's opening of the route leading from the Shrine up to Mt. Fuji. Canceled in 2020 due to Covid, we were fortunate this year to enjoy this ceremony, even in its quite reduced capacity.
Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's most famous areas, and we’ve covered Shinjuku in the past and we will surely shoot more videos in the future of this vibrant and amazing area. But today’s video is a bit different since we will guide you through Shinjuku’s most famous street with one of our “Walking Around” videos. So please just sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

Miyajima Great Torii - 宮島大鳥居 - 4K Ultra HD : Constructed in 1168, the first Torii of Itsukushima Shrine is maybe one of Japan’s most famous Torii and actually represents the boundary between the spirit and the human world.
While many of you may have had the chance to see the Great Torii in person, we bet that not many of you knew that the Great Torii is not buried deep into Miyajima’s beach, but instead stands with its own weight! And its vermilion color is considered ideal for keeping evil spirits away!

Tokyo Ikegami Baien - 池上梅園 - 4K Ultra HD : Located just outside the Ikegami Honmon-Ji temple (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQwDhR0Txy8), Ikegami Baien is a gorgeous little plum tree garden that also features a few small traditional houses built for the unique purpose of the ancient art of the Tea Ceremony. Small yet elegant, Ikegami Baien is a little oasis of peace that is worth checking when visiting Ikegami Honmon-Ji.

Matsumoto Castle - 松本城 - 4K Ultra HD : Depending on where you are getting your information from, Matsumoto Castle in Nagano is either the second or third most beautiful castle in Japan, and to be fair, we cannot disagree here! Located about 220km away from Tokyo it is considered to be one of Japan’s most important national treasures.
Built in the 16th century, the Matsumoto Castle is unlike many other Japanese castles, built on a plain rather than on a hill or mountain top and surrounded by a picturesque moat.
Gorgeous from the outside, Matsumoto Castle also offers a unique chance for its visitors to travel into the past by allowing them to visit each and every floor, making Matsumoto Castle such a unique experience with its many exhibitions of historical weapons and other architectural wonders.
Highly recommended all year long, Matsumoto Castle is one of these marvels of Japan that everybody needs to visit once in their lifetime!

Often wrongly credited as one of the many beautiful temples of Kyoto, Enryakuji, is actually located on top of Mount Hieizan in Shiga prefecture. It is properly credited however as one of the most important monasteries in Japanese history as well as being the headquarters of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Many influential monks studied at Enryakuji, including the founders the Pure Land (Jodo), Zen and Nichiren sects.
Enryakuji Temple was initially founded in 788 by Saicho, the monk who introduced Tendai Buddhism from China and features as many as 3,000 other temples. Enryakuji Temple is also famous for its past army of warrior monks (僧兵 sōhei) who often engaged in power struggles with other monasteries and political leaders in Kyoto, as a counterbalance to power hungry individuals.
Note : Enryakuji Tem main hall is undergoing some renovation and will be covered by scaffolding until at least 2026.

Established in 768 and rebuilt several times over the centuries, Kasuga-taisha is the shrine of the Fujiwara Family and famous for its many bronze and stone lanterns.
Alongside the Kasugayama Primeval Forest near it, the Kasuga-taisha is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara".
The shrine became the object of imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965, Emperor Murakami ordered imperial messengers to be sent out to report on the important events related to the guardian kami of Japan. These Heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines including the Kasuga Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, Kasuga Shrine was officially designated as one of the Kanpei-taisha, or one of the few first ranked of government supported shrines.

Kyoto Jojuji Temple - 浄住寺 - 4K Ultra HD : Jojuji may not be the most visited temple in Kyoto, nor the biggest in size, but thanks to its unique entrance, Jojuji offers, especially in autumn, one of Kyoto’s most magical Momiji (red maple leaves) experiences. And to be fair, and at least for us at TokyoStreetView, Jojuji is exactly what Kyoto is all about; a small and secluded, but truly fantastic, Zen temple that has yet to be too populated by tourists.

Less “violent” than the Okoshi Daiko, the first part of the Hida Furukawa Matsuri, the festival floats parade, known as Yatai, includes the display of nine beautifully decorated festival floats moving through Furukawa. Each Yatai is carried and taken care of by each of the Hida Furukawa city factions generations after generation.
Each Yatai is a marvel of complexity and wonder. Many of them, including Tonomachi faction’s one, which is originally from the 17th century, are some of Japan’s most beautiful mechanized and automated puppets.
Finally, we would like to give a special thanks to all the men of the Tonomachi faction of the City of Hida-Furukawa for not only having us as special guest during this festival but also helping us make this video possible. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Having been around since the beginning of the Kamakura period (1192 - 1333) Saimyoji represents beautiful examples of architecture from that time featuring a nail-free structure. Saimyoji is also Japan’s first National Treasure! The temple includes a stunning approach of over 1,000 maple trees and a gorgeous three-tiered pagoda. In the past Saimyoji survived several attempts to be burned down by the local warlord Oda Nobunaga!
