As an artist I share my resources for finding great copyright, royalty free images that are also free to use as reference when making art. I cover a bunch of online collections and talk about websites such as Pexels, Flickr, British Library, New York Public Library, U.S. Government sites, National Archives, Library of Congress and more. If you are looking for nature references, animals, plants or man made objects, airplanes, ships, buildings, maps these are great sites to explore. I talk about Public Domain imagery, but as a disclaimer please do your own due diligence when using online imagery. This is not legal advice, just a basic guideline for the online resources I often use as an artist.

In this video I walk through the steps I follow to prepare, paint and seal acrylic paintings when painting on metal signs for outdoor use. When I first started making these signs I found the information available online very confusing. This is the best method I've come up with and it has worked well when working on aluminum alloys. I sand the signs and use vinegar and water to prep the surface. I also demonstrate how I use several Rust-Oleum products including a universal primer and an acrylic lacquer clear coat. You'll also see the creative process of me painting the art onto the sign, with a few thoughts on that process. Hope you enjoy.

Watch and learn about the techniques I use in creating this acrylic abstract painting of flowers. I start with an acrylic pour and make a crazy abstract random background. Next I use a negative space painting technique to bring the flowers to life. As I paint I also share another story from my art school days explaining why I haven't painted many flowers as a subject until now. I dig into how I was taught to paint by not thinking about the subject or final result, but guided to focus more on the act of painting. In this one it's all about painting shapes, color and trying to create an expressive impression of the subject, rather than a specific image. At the end I discuss all the upcoming art projects I'm planning and ask for your feedback in choosing which ones you find more interesting. This experiment was fun and interesting. I think I learned some valuable lessons as always. Maybe you too can pick up some tips and tricks from my art practice.

In this video I talk through my process of painting intuitively and staying loose. I work on an abstract warm-up piece to get me in the best mindset to attempt my first ever representational painting of a hummingbird. I use different layering and mark making techniques and the abstract work ends up being an interesting visual piece on it's own. I talk about how I move from being really tight and forcing the work to a much more zen like state where the art just flows. I really do feel like these chaotic abstract exercises influence my art in other styles like representational and even realistic art in a positive way. If nothing else maybe you'll enjoy the short clip of robins playing in the muddy puddles outside my studio. Hope you get something out of this video - if so let me know how it helps in your art journey.
