A keto-carnivore cartoon! Burger versus bun! Will our heroic meat escape the clutches of the carb monster? His fate is up to you! I’ve been really wanting to put my passion for drawing, especially with traditional materials, into more cartoons with a pro-meat message. Cartooning has been an obsession of mine since childhood. As a teenager, inspired by Charles Addams, Gahan Wilson, and other eccentric artists, I sent out a batch of single-panel gags to The New Yorker. (I should frame that rejection letter!) From what I remember, they only accepted drawings in ink in those years around 2000. Preferably India ink, which my artist parents always had around. I love the gentle pungency of its muddy odor to this day. Just for a chance to be in the New Yorker ― my Madison Square Garden as a teen cartoonist ― I taught myself how to draw in grayscale with a dip pen and layers of ink wash. (Luckily, I’d already had practice with a quill on parchment as a dramatic little Goth.) 20 years later, the single-panel cartoon is still one of my favorite forms. It combines joke writing and drawing, along with their respective challenges and rewards. The joke may be a caption or purely visual. The dynamic between the visual and any linguistic elements can create a complex relationship between the setup and punchline. The image is usually the setup, but not always. It can be tricky, and yet an effective cartoon tends to hit you with deceptive simplicity. But enough theory! This is way more colorful than most of my artwork, especially with traditional materials. It was fun to explore bolder colors and try new approaches to technique. I also forced myself to push my original idea into weirdness. This was going to be a scene at a diner with someone critiquing a carnivore’s order. Then I remembered how my brain actually works and let it do its thing. The result was a bun-monster with french-fry tentacles from which a burger patty is fleeing for… well, OUR lives! As in other drawing videos, I have included music written specifically for this artwork. My musical mood was even more 80s than usual. I had Synthwave and video game chiptunes on the brain. Along with the usual Industrial and Goth influences, among others. I hope you have fun with this. I sure did!
