ADHD or just the wrong diet? How food affects your focus
When it comes to children, I think we’ve really missed the boat because there are many reasons why people have attention issues. Today we’re going to look at one of these “causes” of ADD and ADHD – diet and nutrition. I have seen cases where children act like they are never full and eat an incredible amount of food at a time. Afterwards, they appear extremely hyperactive and it would be easy to assume that they have ADHD or just had too much sugar, but we need to go back and look at what is causing the immense hunger. It could be that the child has nutritional deficiencies that aren’t being met, and after eating a large amount, it appears they have ADHD because their body isn’t able to properly process the nutrients in their food. On the flip side, we might think a child has ADD but in reality their metabolic needs are not being met. In some cases we would see a child’s ability to focus drastically improve if they were able to eat more frequently. As we go through the episode, I’ll talk about brainwaves and what is actually going on in our brains when we’re hungry and how diet can actually alter our brain chemistry leading to problems with paying attention, impulsivity, social interactions, and motivation.
ADHD is a condition has become more and more common and unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation out there about it. My goal in these two episodes is to really give you an overview of what ADHD actually is, the history surrounding it, and what the medications used to treat it are doing to a person’s brain.
I recently listened to a podcast focused on medications for kids with ADHD and how these medications were generally okay for kids to take. However, when kids are taking this type of medication during open windows of development, this will impact their cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems, as well as their brains!
In part one we dive into the history of the ADHD diagnosis – when it first came to attention, how it’s classified, and how the perception of it has changed. We’ll also take a look at ritalin, one of the most common ADHD medications out there, and some of the incredibly dangerous effects of ritalin withdrawal.
If you or your child are being treated for ADD or ADHD, please take the time to listen to this podcast. Education is power and in order to really make the best decisions about your care it is essential that you understand how the medical system is designed to work and what some of the issues are with how ADD and ADHD are handled today.

In today’s episode we’re going to take a look at the clinical case of a child I worked with who came in to my clinic experiencing high levels of stress and overwhelm. There are many children that have very heightened emotional reactions, but how do we navigate this? Children don’t have a point of reference to tell us if something is wrong, so if you are concerned it’s always a good idea to get an evaluation. In the case of this child, at first glance it seemed like he was developing as expected, but on a closer look, it became clear to me that he had a retained Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR). The ATNR is such a far-reaching reflex and it was no wonder this child was experiencing so many emotional difficulties. This wasn’t a kid having behaviour issues, this was a child demonstrating something faulty was going on. The good news is that the earlier we can recognize this in a child, the earlier we can change it!

Today we are going to look at how stimulant medications actually work, things to consider when stopping or starting stimulant medications, and how too much screen usage is actually linked to symptoms of ADHD in children and teens.
The number of kids being diagnosed with some form of attention issue is growing every year. I believe that parents have the right to make decisions for their kids, but I believe that those decisions need to be informed by research and facts that many parents are not aware of. It is your job as a parent to research and learn so that you can make the best decisions for your child. My hope is that this podcast will be a helpful and encouraging starting point for you.

There are so many reasons a child could experience developmental delay. When I work with a child, I want to know where development was interrupted. Sometimes it’s as far back as their mom’s health during conception, pregnancy, or birth, but other times it’s due to an event that occurred during the child’s life. I think it’s important to talk with our children and work with them – they need to be active participants in order to get things back on track. Being able to identify signs of developmental delay is crucial in order to try to make a change. Creating new patterns in our brains and changing our developmental trejectory can be a big job, but if we’re willing to put in the work, I belive that change is possible for anyone at any time.

Today I’m going to be sharing another case study with you, this time of an 8-year old boy who struggled with anxiety, a suspected attention deficit disorder, and all kinds of other health issues such as asthma, eczema, and poor balance. As we explore his story together, I’ll talk you through everything from his mom’s pregnancy to his infancy and toddler years to now. It’s remarkable how a child’s circumstances and environment have such an impact on development. My hope is that these case studies will help bring awareness and hope to some of the struggles you might face with your own children. When I first met this boy, he had all kinds of struggles, but his story of change, healing, and health will definitely give you hope!

Every parent who has brought their child to me because of attention issues also says that their child is not motivated. First off, it is important to know that, just like attention, motivation has a sequence of development in our brains. Motivation is an internal process and we need to teach this process to our kids starting when they are toddlers! Expectation leads to motivation. We need to teach our kids to clean up, be involved, and contribute to the home. This is easiest to teach when our kids our toddlers because we can gradually increase expectation as our children grow. However, it is possible to implement this with older children, but you will experience more resistance and it will take several months to see a change. In this episode I’ll talk about creating the environment and tone you want for your home, setting age-appropriate expectations for your kids, and why it’s so important to be consistent with our kids from the time they are young. You’ve been given the gift of a child and it is your job to raise them to be an adult that can contribute to the world. At Connect My Brain we are here to support you and help you figure out what will work for you and your family.

Today I’m so fortunate to have James Roguski with me, who is a researcher and author for a natural health proponent, and an activist for getting old systems out and new systems in.
James Roguski uses his research of the World Health Organization (WHO) to educate the public on what really happens behind WHOs closed doors. He shares with us the dangers of The Zero Treaty, and of the proposed amendments to existing International Health Regulations (IHR). We discuss the concerning effects these changes can have on our governments, personal freedoms, and our own personal health decisions. We uncover the global decisions that affect our personal health care and talk about how to take action to make your voice heard.

Anxiety is on the rise in our children. It’s reported that 1 in 8 children are experiencing some type of anxiety and there are many reasons for this. Children’s lives have changed a lot over the past few years and thave different worries and challenges coming their way than children would have had one or two decades ago. Therefore, instead of looking at stress and anxiety as mental disorders, I look at them as developmental seasons in a child’s life and consider the question, “Did something happen that could have potentially led to the state this child is currently in?”. I cover lots of information in this episode including the development of worry, why movement is such an important tool to combat stress, the importance of allowing our children to make mistakes, outward signs that a child is experiencing anxiety, how our brains respond to stress and anxiety, and strategies that can help reduce chronic stress and anxiety.
